Owain Gwynedd (the second son of Gruffudd ap Cynan, Prince of Gwynedd and Angharad ferch Owain, the daughter of Owain ab Edwin of Tegeingl) was born around the year 1080, probably on the Isle of Anglesey, which his father had established as his power base. died in 1170, despite having been excommunicated, he was interred in Bangor Cathedral. After his death, civil war broke out between his sons.
Owain was married twice, his first wife Gwladys ferch Llywarch ap Trahaearn, was the mother of two of his sons,
Maelgwn ab Owain Gwynedd and
Iorwerth Drwyndwn, the father of Llywelyn the Great,
by Christina, his second wife he had three sons including
Dafydd ab Owain Gwynedd and
Rhodri ab Owain Gwynedd.
He also had a number of illegitimate sons, who by Welsh law had an equal claim on the inheritance if acknowledged by their father.[2]
Iorwerth ab Owain Gwynedd (or Iorwerth Drwyndwn), also called Edward (1145–1174), meaning "the broken-nosed", was the eldest legitimate son of Owain Gwynedd (the king of Gwynedd) and his first wife Gwladys (Gladys) ferch Llywarch.[3]

Llywarch, the eldest son, had issue by Dyddgw, his wife, daughter of Idnerth ab Cadwgan ab Elystan, three sons and two daughters. The sons were,—
Robert, ancestor of the Lords of Cedewain, etc.;
Meredydd;
Iorwerth;
and the daughters,—1, Gwladys, consort of Prince Owain Gwynedd, by whom he had issue, Iorwerth Drwyndwn, Prince of Wales, Cynan, Maelgwn, Gwladys, and Gwenllian, wife of Owain Cyfeilioc;
Mabli, wife of Ieuaf ab Niniaf ab Cynric ab Rhiwallon ab Dingad ab Tudor Trefor. According to the Golden Grove Book, Eva, the daughter of Adda, son of this Ieuaf (or Adda ab Awr ab Ieuaf), was wife of Ieuaf ab Cuhelyn ab Rhyn ab Einion Evell.[4]
