Biography

European Aristocracy
Lord John Lumley was a member of the aristocracy in England.

John Lumley was born/baptised in 1533 at Lumley Castle, County Durham, England. About 1533/1534 is reported in various sources. [1]
He was the son of George Lumley and Jane Knightley

He was an infant in 1537 when his father was executed.

John Lumley (1533-11 Apr 1609) was the grandson of John Lumley, 4th/5th Baron of Lumley (first creation).

That title had not been passed on to his father George Lumley, who had been executed in 1537 for his involvement with Bigod's rebellion.

John Lumley the grandson successfully petitioned King Edward VI, claiming that he was a child at the time, and in 1547 he was restored as 1st Baron Lumley (second Creation). [2] [3]

He was knighted on 29 Sept 1553 (p.49[3]).

First Marriage

Lord John Lumley married Lady Jane FitzAlan, daughter of Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel. They married before March 1552.[4][2] They were present as Lord and Lady Lumley at the coronation of Queen Mary in 1553.[3] She died and was buried on 9 March 1576/77, at Cheam, Surrey, as were her three children Charles, Thomas and Maria, all of whom died in infancy.[2][3]

Second Marriage

Lord John Lumley subsequently married Lady Elizabeth Darcy, daughter of John, Lord Darcy of Chiche. They married in 1582 (He settled his Nonsuch Estate on her by Indenture on 16 June 1582 (p.74[3])). They had no children.
She died in 1617[2] or 1618[4] and was also buried at Cheam, Surrey.[2]

Death

Lord John Lumley, 1st Baron Lumley (2nd Creation) passed away without any surviving children on 11 Apr 1609, age 76.[4] [2] He was buried at Cheam with his first wife; a tomb and monument there at St. Dunstan’s Church memorialize Lumley and his two wives.[2]

At his death the Barony of Lumley became extinct.

Checked the ODNB version on Ancestry. Does not provide much genealogical info (eg nothing on wife and children), but agrees with what is here and provides more on his life. Added as a See Also.

Did he have a daughter named Elizabeth who married Francis (Frauncis) Anderson, brother of Bertram Anderson of Newcastle, mayor and MP? I'm seeing this claim put forth in Visitations, but no proof on the Lumley end. If someone finds documentation in support or against... please put it on Francis' profile (no profile for Elizabeth exists yet).
