Etta was my grandmother - She was the oldest of 16 siblings. Her mother died when she was 7.
In February of 1925 Launa (her mother) gave birth to a son. She never recovered from the childbirth and died in May; the child Doyle James died in October of that same year.
In October of 1927 her father, Dan (who was left with 4 small children) , married again. He married Lillie Mae Fisher, who at the time of the marriage had two small daughters (Velma and Bessie). They created a fairly large blended family and then went on to have 10 more children together. The family farmed and as the oldest girl her job was to stay home, take care of the babies and cook lunch while everyone else went to the field. She was an excellent cook and also very handy with a long gun. She could grow anything, her yard was filled with flowers and trees. Etta was a wonderful story teller, she had some of the best ghost stories and she loved to talk about her childhood growing up in Blackjack.
