Too Many Graces

  • Grace Makin: d/o Tobias; died after 1643; m. Edmund Sherman
  • Grace Ravens: d. 1662; m. John Sherman, Thomas Rogers (d. 1638) and Roger Porter
  • Grace Makin has been confused with Grace Ravens, wife of Thomas Rogers:
  • This profile previously noted an unsourced Thomas Rogers as a husband. He has since been detached.
  • This Grace Makin was not married to Thomas Rogers or William Smith.
  • Torrey's New England Marriages confused them assigning Makin to John Sherman and Thomas Rogers.[1] The Sherman Genealogy confused them naming Makin as John's wife.[2]

Biography

Grace Makin, the alleged daughter of Tobias Makin and Katherine Westbrome of Fingringhoe, Essex, was born say 1578. She married Edmund Sherman about 1598 and in 1635 they emigrated to New England. They lived in Watertown, Massachusetts and in Wethersfield, Connecticut by 1638, and in New Haven by 1640. Grace Makin Sherman was living on June 14, 1643 when she was named in the will of her husband's half-brother Samuel Sherman.[3][4]. John Livermore was his son-in-law. In 1646 this share had passed to John Thomas [BA 43], who was in New Haven by 7 April 1640 [5]. John Thomas is not known to be related to the Sherman family, and this transfer may indicate that the widow Sherman had died prior to 1646.

Their children were all baptized in Dedham, Essex, England[6]:

  1. Edmund.
  2. Ann
  3. Joan
  4. Hester
  5. Richard
  6. Bezaliel
  7. John
  8. Grace
  9. Samuel
  10.  ?Daughter

Parents

The following list has an entry for each of the 123 proprietary shares in the 1640 List of Estates, in the order given in that document. The names of the Quarters have been assigned based on information found elsewhere in the early New Haven records. Suburbs Quarter 81) Widow Sherman [2/50] (I think clerical error)

Some place Joan Makin, daughter of Tobias Makin of Fingringhoe, as the wife of Edmund. Tobias Makin named Edmund Sherman in his will. He also named a daughter as Grace Sherman but he did not state that she was married to Edmund. It is suggested likely Grace was the wife of John Sherman - he died and Grace apparently married three more times - to Thomas Rogers, William Palmer, and lastly to Roger Porter. Various records referring to children of Grace suggests she was not the mother of the children of Edmund Sherman. However, the article in The American Genealogist, cited next, proves that Grace was still a Sherman in 1621 when named in her brother's will, and could not have been the wife of John Sherman, Thomas Rogers who had a child baptized in 1617 and Roger Porter. Tobias Makin also named a Richard Sherman in his will - he did not state that Richard was a grandson but did named him as a son of Edmund Sherman - Richard received 5 £ as did a named grandchild. In the Dedham Parish Register is the following baptism entry: "1608 Oct 16, Richard son of Edmund and Jone Sherman" [7]

The American Genealogist[8] has an article stating that Joan, daughter of Tobias Makin, married Richard Stone as her only husband, disputing the above Sherman research. She was also a generation younger than Edmund Sherman.

The remote possibility remains that Grace could have been called "Joan" in error in the baptismal record in 1608, but that seems doubtful given that the Richard baptized in 1608 was probably the fifth child of that Edmund & Joan and singling out a 5th child in a will, as did Tobias Makin, seems unlikely. There were Shermans living in Dedham at that time and it seems probable that Edmund Sherman's wife was not one of the daughters of Tobias Makin.

The Great Migration sketch of Edmund Sherman online states that his wife "was not Joan Makin, daughter of Tobias Makin" but notes this is from the above TAG article, Jul-Oct 1985.

Samuel Sherman, of Dedham, brother of Edmund, left a will dated 14 Jun 1643 in which he made a bequest to his "loving sister Sherman, Edmond's widow, and to her son Samuel...her son John ....her daughters Grace and Ester Ward and her youngest daughter. "Ester" Ward can only be Hester Sherman who married Andrew Ward.[9]

Research Notes

  • Edmund Sherman (c. 1574-c. 1641) m. by 1599 Grace Makin, d/o Tobias Makin. She was living 14 June 1643. [10]

Additional Information

Some place Grace Makin, daughter of Tobias Makin of Fingringhoe, as the wife of Edmund. Tobias Makin named Edmund Sherman in his will. He also named a daughter as Grace Sherman [not Joan] but he did not state that she was married to Edmund. It is suggested likely Grace was the wife of John Sherman - he died and Grace apparently married three more times - to Thomas Rogers, William Palmer, and lastly to Roger Porter. Various records referring to children of Grace suggests she was not the mother of the children of Edmund Sherman.

The article in The American Genealogist, cited next, proves that Grace was still a Sherman in 1621 when named in her brother's will, and could not have been the wife of John Sherman, Thomas Rogers who had a child baptized in 1617 and Roger Porter - so that research was wrong, too. Tobias Makin also named a Richard Sherman in his will - he did not state that Richard was a grandson but did name him as a son of Edmund Sherman - Richard received 5 £ as did a named grandchild. In the Dedham Parish Register is the following baptism entry: "1608 Oct 16, Richard son of Edmund and Jone Sherman" - so it is obvious that Edmund's wife was Joan - and Richard was their 5th child. NEHGR (1897) 51:313[11]

The American Genealogist, 61:79-82 [Jul-Oct 1985] has an article stating that Joan, daughter of Tobias Makin, married Richard Stone as her only husband, disputing the Sherman research. She was also a generation younger than Edmund Sherman.[12]

Makin-8 and Makin-1 appear to represent the same person because: Makin-8 was an unsourced duplicate and has now been prepped for a clean merge to Makin-1.

Should the death date be "after 1610"? Or was it possibly her marriage date? She appears likely to be a duplicate to Grace (Makin) Sherman. Her father died in 1610, and named her in his will as Grace Sherman at that time; So her death date would have been after 1610, and her marriage date would have been before 1610. See the other profile for sources + The American Genealogist 61(1985), page 81.

It would be great if we could connect her to the tree and also clear the unmerged match.

I say yes, it's a duplicate with no data and no sources so let's change her dates, wipe out the bio and roll her up with Makin-1.

Sounds good, Brad. When I looked the other day, I thought there was a PM.... But now that there isn't let's do what you suggest.

Thanks

McKim-98 and Makin-1 appear to represent the same person because: Correct LNAB = MAKIN. Full name = Grace Makin, McKim being a transcription error. This person appears to be same as Grace (Makin) Sherman. Merge requested.

Done. That's why I adopted McKim - so the merge could just proceed.

McKim-5 and Makin-1 appear to represent the same person because: If I edit McKim first it creates an extra redirect/merge. (McKim into Makin then Makin into Makin. It is much better to just merge it into the lowest numbered profile with the correct spelling.

McKim-5 and Makin-1 are not ready to be merged because: Surname McKim-5 should first be edited especially as Makin-1 is PPP

Is this the same person as Makin-1, Death is different, but this profile has no other attachments. You could change the date and then merge.

Research notes:

"MAKIN, GRACE b. say 1585; m. bef. 1610 ----- Sherman (prob. an Edmund Sherman, of an unknown place but in all likelihood a member of the Dedham, co. Essex, Sherman family and father of the Richard Sherman mentioned in Tobias Makin's will). Because she was still a Sherman in 1621, she could not be (emphasis added) the Grace who m. (1) John Sherman, (2) Thomas Rogers by 1617 (when a child was baptized), and (3) Roger Porter."[2] "Was Tobias Makin an Ancestor of the New England Shermans?"
