Biography

Katherine Malpas[1] Ormerod mistakenly names her Alice[2]

Parents

Katherine was the daughter of David de Malpas,[1] of Hampton and Bickerton, and his wife, Katherine, daughter of Hugh de Bickerton.[2] [3]

Katherine's father, David de Malpas was living 14 and 15 Richard II (1390-1392) and was heir to his brother 4 Henry 4 (1402-1403) and died before 1413 (ob ante 1 Henry 5).[2]

Birth Year Estimation

Katherine's sister Matild was given a dispensation for marriage to her cousin in 1403,[2] so was born, say, 1390. Katherine's daughters were born about 1410, which would make 1390 a reasonable estimated birth for Katherine as well. Such estimates are highly speculative and useful only for placing a person in the correct time frame.

Siblings

Katherine was the sister of:

  1. John de Malpas[1] of Hampton and Bickerton, esq, died before 8 Hen 5 (1420-21). Circa 6 Hen 5 (1418-19) he married Joan;[2]
  2. Matild, wife of Philip de Egerton, dispensation for marriage dated Sep 1, 1403;[2] mother of John Eggerton;[1]
  3. Margaret, wife of Christopher Hough of Leighton;[2] mother of Thomas Hough;[1]
  4. Elizabeth[1]or Isabell, wife of Nicholas de Huxley, 2dly, of John Kynaston, and 3rdly, of Robert Erdswick, o.s.p;[2]
  5. Sibill, wife of William Tomminson of Halifax, co. Ebor.[2]

Marriage and Children

Katherine was married to John Bryde[1] or Bird de Cherleton[3] that is Chorlton, Cheshire.

Katherine and John had children:

  1. Alice, living on 11 November, 1433;[1] married William Honford;[3]
  2. Katherine, living on 11 November, 1433;[1] married Richard Golborne;[3]
  3. Agnes, living on 11 November, 1433;[1] married Humfrey Hill;[3]
  4. Margaret, living on 11 November, 1433;[1] married Robert Powell of Wrixham;[3]

Death

Katherine was dead before 11 November, 1433, when her daughters were given seisin of her share of the lands, etc. within the county of Chester of the gift of John, son of David del Malpas, to his sisters.[1]

On Wednesday, Martinmas Day, 12 Henry VI [11 November 1433], at Chester, letters were enrolled for Richard Flechier, rector of Haselwall, and John Thyknys appointing John Ithell their attorney to deliver to Elizabeth, daughter of David del Malpas, John Eggerton, Katherine, Margaret, Alice, and Agnes, daughters and heirs of John Bryde and of Katherine, daughter of David de Malpas, and to Thomas Hogh, seisin of all the lands, etc. which they had by the gift of John, son of David del Malpas, within the county.[1]

Research Notes

Additional Child

A supposed additional child of John Bird and his wife, Sarah Bird Johnson was previously connected as a child. Because she does not appear in documents showing this family, she has been de-linked.
