Oliver was a younger son of Oliver Mainwaring ofDevon and Prudence Ashe (or Aishe, Ayshe). He is said to have been 89 at his death in November 1723, pointing to a birth date of about 1634,[1] and to have been baptised at Dawlish, Devon on 16 March 1633/4[2][3][4] though no baptism record has been found.
Oliver immigrated to New England, settling in New London, Connecticut.[2][3] Some records refer to him as a seaman or mariner.[4]
Before 1662 (when his father-in-law deeded land to him[5]) Oliver married Hannah Raymond (baptised at Salem, Massachusetts on 12 February 1642/3), daughter of Richard Raymond of Massachusetts and Connecticut and Judith.[2][3] They had the following children:
Hannah,[2][3] who was baptised on 10 September 1671 and who married John Harris[6]
Elizabeth, who married Peter Harris[2][3] and was baptised on 10 September 1671[6]
Prudence, who married John Beckwith[2][3] and was baptised on 10 September 1671[6]
Love, who married John Richards[2][3] and was baptised on 10 September 1671[6]
Judith, who married Simon Ray[2][3] and was baptised on 2 April 1676[6]
Bathsheba,[2][3] baptised 9 May 1680:[7] she was not mentioned in her father's 1721 will, nor were any children referred to in it, so she probably died, childless, before then[6]
Anne, who married Jeremiah Wilson[2][3] and was baptised on 18 June 1682[6]
Mercy, who married Jonathan Palmer[2][3] and who may have been baptised in about 1684 (the date is obliterated in the record):[8] she was subsequently baptised again as an adult on 25 October 1702[6][8]
Four of the children were baptised in 1671 after Oliver's wife joined "Mr Bradstreet's church" in New London, Connecticut:[8] this likely to be the church of Simon Bradstreet.
On 3 November 1664 Oliver bought 11 acres in New London, Connecticut.[2][3][7] On 25 June 1668 his father-in-law gave him two acres in Salem, Massachusetts: Oliver is described as of New London in the deed.[9]
Oliver was a freeman of Connecticut in 1669. In 1687 he paid for a licence to maintain a "a house of publique entertainment and retail drink".[8]
Oliver's wife Hannah died at New London, Connecticut on 18 December 1717. Oliver survived her, dying at New London on 3 November 1723.[2][3]
Oliver's will was dated 15 November 1721,[6] was proved on 19 December 1723.[2][3] In it he:[6]
described himself as Oliver Manwaring of New London, Connecticut
named:
his deceased wife Hannah and her deceased brother Samuel Raymond
his sons Richard and Oliver
his then-living daughters Love Richards (and her husband "Richards" and son John Richards), Hannah Harris, Prudence Beckwith and Mercy Palmer
his deceased daughters Elizabeth Harris, Judith Ray and Ann Wilson
his son-in-law Jeremiah Willson/Wilson (the last name is spelt both ways in the will)
his nephew Oliver Manwaring "in England"
Research Notes
Children
Frances Manwaring Caulkins' History of New London, Connecticut states that all the children listed above were living at their father's death.[7] This is proved incorrect by Oliver's will, which refers to three daughters as deceased.[6]
