Biography

Flag of Hampshire (adopted 2019)
Thomas Marshall was born in Hampshire, England.
Thomas Marshall
Birth: about 1545, England
Death: bef 27 Nov 1618 (when his will was admitted for probate), Downton, Wiltshire, England
Father: Thomas Marshall I
Mother: Ellen
Marriage: Thomas Marshall married Mary Cotton about 1569 at Abbotts Ann, Hampshire. Mary was born ca. 1553 and died ca. 1618 before her husband's will was probated
“Administration on November 27, 1618 to Mary Stullard alias Marshall (sic), daughter of the defunct, Mary Marshall the relict having died before she proved.”[1]
Thomas Marshall’s parents and paternal grandparents are identified in his 1575 pedigree, accessible at www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Marshall-65, also appearing within this profile.[2]

Children of Thomas Marshall and Mary, daughter of Henry Cotton

Thomas and Mary had the following children:

  1. Thomas Marshall, son and heir, b. abt 1570; still living in 1623 when he was mentioned by his grandmother and godmother, widow Margaret Cotton of the Parish of St Clement Danes, London, England
  2. John Marshall, b. abt 1572, prob. at Abbot’s Ann, Hampshire, England
  3. Elizabeth Marshall, b. abt 1574
  4. Anne Marshall, b. abt 1576, prob. at Abbot’s Ann, Hampshire, England; d. aft 12 Apr 1641; m. 1602, Philobert Cogan, b. 1563, of Chard, Somerset; d. prob. early 1641—his Will proved 12 Apr 1641
  5. Mary Marshall, m. John Scullard of Wiltshire, miscalled Stullard
  6. Lucy Marshall

Research Notes on Thomas Marshall (c1545-1618)

His will was dated 3-19-1613, thus probably 1613/1614; admitted to probate 11-27-1618, abstracted in Miscellania Marescalliana Vol. I p. 97. There is no record of his actual date of death. Therefore, using a specific date of death such as 3-19-1618 is incorrect. His year of birth is estimated (1545) and his place of birth is uncertain. Per his pedigree, Thomas married Mary Cotton ca. 1569; their eldest child Thomas was born ca. 1570. Son Thomas was living in 1623, see below. The statement previously in this profile that son Thomas was buried 8-28-1616 must apply to a different Thomas Marshall, possibly the husband of Mary Stokman daughter of Richard Cotton. Still another profile claims son Thomas died in Virginia on 3-19-1618 (this may be confused with the Marshall(s) who removed to Virginia.) Wife Mary’s family lived in London, so it is unlikely she was born at Abbotts Ann. Her father was Henry Cotton, identified in Marshall’s pedigree, as is Henry’s wife Margaret, whose nee name is not given in the pedigree nor elsewhere. Mary (Cotton) Marshall died ca. 1618, and certainly before her husband’s will was proved in Nov. 1618; the will named Mary as executor; but administration was given to Thomas’s daughter Mary Scullard, “the relict having died before she proved...” This profile’s statement that Mary died in 1625 was a misrepresentation of fact which has been corrected, likewise on Mary’s profile. An unspecified document rendered by Mary’s mother Margaret, made in 1623, then a widow and living in St. Clement Danes Parish, London, identified her grandson Thomas Marshall and indicated he was living then, according to Seversmith. Thomas’s daughter Mary, who is not attached to this profile, married John Scullard of Wilts. Mary Scullard was made administrator of her father’s will, misspelled Stullard in the probate record. Sources used in compiling this Note were added to this profile.

A Thomas Marshall who does not fit this profile

Thomas Marshall was born about 1545, probably at Salisbury, Wiltshire. His father, of Lincolnshire origin, settled in Salisbury. Thomas married Mary (Cotton) Stokman, born about 1545 at Warblington, Hampshire. She was the daughter of Sir Richard Cotton of Warblington.[3]
Mary married first Henry Stokman. Following his death, "Marie Stokman" married Thomas Marshall 28 Aug 1569 at Abbotts Ann, Hampshire.[4] Thomas' marriage to Mary Cotton brought him a house at Abbotts Ann. Thomas and Mary passed away after 1579, probably at Abbotts Ann.

Children of Thomas Marshall and Mary (Stokman) Marshall, daughter of Richard Cotton

Note: A Henry Stokman was buried 3 Jun 1570 at Abbotts Ann, Hampshire.[5]
1. Thomas Marshall, bap. 13 Nov 1574 at Abbotts Ann, Hampshire, England[3][6]
"bap. 13 Nov. 1574, o.s. of Thomas Marshall of Salisbury, Wilts. and Mary, da. of Sir Richard Cotton† of Warblington, Hants, wid. of Henry Stockman of Abbotts Ann. m. Mary (d.1618), 1s. 2da. bur. 28 Aug. 1616.
Mixture of two Thomas Marshalls
Marshall’s grandfather, of Lincolnshire origin, settled in Salisbury. His father’s marriage brought him a house in Abbotts Ann, near Andover, some 25 miles north of Lymington......In 1607 Marshall moved to Downton, taking over his cousin Thomas Stockman’s* lease from Winchester College of a house with 35 acres of land. He does not seem to have stood for election to the Addled Parliament. He drew up his will on 19 Mar. 1614, leaving his widow to inherit his house in Abbotts Ann, which had been let, and his lease at Downton; however, she died before the will was proved, and the property passed to his son, Thomas. Marshall was buried at Downton on 28 Aug. 1616. Nothing is known of his descendants."[3]
2. Mary Marshall, bap. 1 May 1576 at Abbotts Ann, Hampshire, England[7]
3. Anne Marshall, bap. 1 Nov 1579 at Abbotts Ann, Hampshire, England[8]

Thomas the son of the profiled Marshall was living in 1623 when when mentioned in the will of his grandmother Margaret Cotton of St. Clement Danes parish, London. Her will identified 6 children of the union of Thomas Marshall and Mary Cotton daughter of Henry Cotton.

Evidently there was more than one Thomas Marshall of ABbots Ann, Hampshire. This profile erroneously combines data of both men..

The father of Thomas Marshall's wife Mary Cotton was Henry Cotton, so identified by their son Thomas Marshall in his 1575 pedigree

VIsitation of Hampshire. That certainly being so, the Marshall descending from Richard Cotton does not belong in this profile. THis profile contains major errors.

Henry Stokman was buried in June 1570. So his widow did not marry Thomas Marshall in 1569 and have a son in 1570. This profile is a bad joke.

Perhaps you have information/sources to add, which would be appreciated. You will see that the bio states “A Henry Stokman…” You will also see that various family scenarios are presented, based on information from different researchers and available sources.

Hi Guys

Suggestion - 210 Father was dead before birth - needs fixing

Would appreciate it if you could resolve the issue of Date of Birth has current father died in 1541 that is 4 years before this Thomas Marshall was born

IF still needing to research can I suggest you detach father and son from each other

Marshall-12903 and Marshall-50 are not ready to be merged because: According to sources, wife of Marshall-50 is Mary, dau. of Henry Cotton, while wife of Marshall-12903 is Mary, dau. of Richard Cotton. The profile of Marshall-50's son Thomas (Marshall-4213) consists of errors and omissions. I've done extensive research and edited Marshall-4213 according to the sources I located, and sent my research to each of the Marshall portfolio managers but received no response. Therefore, I restored Marshall-4213 to its original. Also, Marshall-50's dau. Elizabeth (Marshall) Potter may be connected to the wrong parents.

Sara, you still around ?

Marshall-12903 is now orphaned and the PM of -50 hasn't been on wikitree for a few years.

Sounds like your research should take precedence. What do you think it will take to resolve this unmerged match?

Thanks Jillaine. I’ve adopted Marshall-12903 and initiated another merge.

The third source, pedigree of this profiled person rendered in 1575, identifies Henry Cotton as his spouse's father. That should be conclusive.

Marshall-12903 and Marshall-50 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year. Same spouse. Same son Thomas (also needs merging. Death year on -50 appears more accurate. Other one is an "after"

Marshall-5411 and Marshall-50 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same wife, same dates
