Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

George Martin was born 17 September 1680 in Chebacco Parish (later the Town of Essex), Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts.[1][2][3] He was a son of George Martin. Contrary to the conclusions reported 19th and 20th-century genealogies such as the Martin genealogy by Alven M. Smith, his father was NOT the son of George Martin and his wife Susannah (North) Martin, who was accused of witchcraft and hanged in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692.[4]

In the Ipswich Vital Records, this man is called George Jr. in the records of his marriages in 1706 and 1709, probably to avoid confusion with his father, who also resided in Ipswich at that time.[5]

George Martin married three times. His first wife was Anna Choate, daughter of John Choate of Chebacco; they married on 29 November 1706.[5] His second wife was Mercy Durkee; they married after publishing their intentions in Chebacco Parish on 4 June 1709.[5] His third wife was Mercy Lincoln; they married on 5 November 1736 in Windham, Connecticut. [6]

Martin-64696 and Martin-13836 appear to represent the same person because: This is a previously rejected merge request with no explanation. Martin-64696 and Martin-13836 are a very good match. Please merge or explain why they could not possibly be the same person.

The death date of 1734 did not belong on this profile. The George Martin who died in 1734 was Martyn-19, the father of this George Martin. This George Martin died in 1755 in Windham, Connecticut.

The generations of men named "George Martin" associated with this family can be very confusing:

1. Martin-1109 - born in England, 1618; died in Mass. 1685 - NOT this man's ancestor, but formerly identified as such.

2. Martin-23874 - born in about 1648, location unknown; lived in Ipswich, Mass. from about 1680 to his death in 1734 - This man's father.

3. This George, born in Ipswich 1680, died in Windham Conn. 1755

4. Martin-22754, 1712-1794, Windham, Conn.

5. Son of George 22754, born 1753 in Conn. (another baby named George had died earlier).
