William Maule was the youngest of the three sons of Robert Maule of Panmure, Angus, by his (second) marriage to Isabel Arbuthnott, widow of David Ochterlony.[1][2] His parents were married in 1545,[3] so William was most likely born sometime around 1548 or possibly later.
Career
In 1558 and 1565 William was listed as a substitute of entail in the charters of Skryne lands to his older brothers, Henry and Andrew.[1][2] He was admitted merchant burgess of Edinburgh by right of his wife on 25 July 1579.[1][2]
He paid 6000 merks on 19 May 1592 to John Guthre of Collieston for a charter of the lands of Cruikston in Forfar,[4] which lands he sold in 1610 to David Carnegie of Brechin.[5] He had served a term as Dean of Guild of Edinburgh by November 1607.[1][6]
William died 19 April 1619.[13] His wife , Bethia, died 22 December 1624.[1][14]
