Biography

Mariota (Maxwell) Boyd is a member of Clan Maxwell.

Mariota was the daughter of Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood[1][2] presumedly by his wife Marion Boyd.[3]

She married Robert Boyd.[1][2][4] They had issue:[5]

  1. Thomas, Master of Boyd, created Earl of Arran, was in Denmark when his father was overthrown. However, he fulfilled his mission, that of bringing the king's bride, Margaret, to Scotland, and then, warned by his wife, escaped to the continent of Europe. He is mentioned very eulogistically in one of the Paston Letters, but practically nothing is known of his subsequent history.
  2. Alexander who became head of the family after the death of James, the son of his elder brother Thomas.
  3. Archibald of Nariston and afterwards in Bonshaw. Archibald is recorded as being of Nariston in 1472, but it appears that there was a question over his right to the property and he had lost possession by 1500. In 1502 Archibald and his wife Christian Mure had a lease of Bonschaw and Dririg. He was dead before 4 May 1507, when Christian Mure, his widow, and her sons, paid a year's rent on taking over the lease. She was living 28 January 1523. They appear to have had two sons and' three daughters.
  4. John, witness to the sasine of his nephew James in Kilmarnock 22 October 1482.
  1. Elizabeth. She was married, as first wife, 4 March 1467-68, to Archibald (Douglas), fifth Earl of Angus, ‘Bell the Cat’ ...
  2. Annabella, married as first wife, to Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar. He died after May 1417.
  3. Margaret. She appears as wife of Robert Boyd of Badenheath, and daughter of the late Robert Lord Boyd

Mariot died after 25 June 1472, apparently early in 1473.[1][2]

Research Notes

The date of the marriage is not recorded but as her husband was arranging a marriage for the eldest son in 1467, one can assume that son's birth was prior to 1453 and Mariota's marriage before 1452.
Based on the marriage estimate, one can be certain that Mariota was born before 1440.
N.B. Cokayne has her father's first name as 'Robert' whereas Paul has it as 'John.'
Scots Peerage gives 'Janet' as an alternate name for Marion and that is the name found in the Exchequer Rolls cited by both Scots Peerage and the Complete Peerage.
Mariota's parents married before 20 Jul 1454
The Peerage: Mariota Maxwell; includes date for 1442 marriage that is provably incorrect
WebCards: Mariot Maxwell

The father listed here was born in the same decade as Mariota's children. I'm no genealogist, but that seems unlikely.

Much of the birth, marriage, and death information is unrecorded, unavailable, or undiscovered. The best one can do is to latch on to known dates and extrapolated from there. I did this for Mariota just now: her son's marriage was being arranged in 1467 and the minimum age for a groom is 14 placing his birth before 1453 (few married at such a tender age so we can GUESS that he was probably born before 1443, but we KNOW he was born before 1453. He was of legitimate birth so his parents married before 1452 and, as the minimum age for a bride was 12, Mariota was born before 1440. Again, we can guess that she was born before 1420, but a fact is better than a guess IMHO.

Feel free to find some firm dates and develop suggestions to help develop better estimates but as it stands now, we would need to do quite a few to resolve the conflict you have so aptly identified.

My concern is with the birth year of her father, John Maxwell. As it stands now, he's younger than his daughter, and the same age as his grandchildren. He's also 35 years younger than Mariota's mother. He's the piece that doesn't fit; the approximate dates for everyone else around Mariota could work. I'm including the dates for her mother and her mother's father and his parents, her husband and his parents, and her children and her children's children. It seems that disconnecting him or adjusting his birth year (if evidence supports that) would resolve the conflict.

I agree. At first glance, the problem might be that his father should be connected instead. . . . however, that is at first glance so my recommendation is to replace as many 'about' dates based on wild guesses and use 'before' or 'after' dates that can be rooted to confident dates (with research notes explaining the date or estimated date. Even before that, improving the reliable sources to whatever extent feasible would be helpful. At that point, there will be enough information to make a confident assessment.

This Mariot / Janet Maxwell (wife of Sir Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd, and parents of Thomas, Earl of Arran, Sir Alexander Boyd, etc.) was the daughter of Sir Robert Maxwell of Calderwood.

Hi Can you have a look at Janet Maxwell The original bio in that profile appears to refer to your Mariota Janet Maxwell. "My" Janet's profile was a mix up of yours and mine. I'm happy I've got the right person now. (I'd been doing a review of the Maxwells of Calderwood line )

Not sure what is worth transferring or just deleting !!

Thanks Maria
