John Thomas Mayes was the son of John G. Mayes and Pernetta Ann (White) Mayes.
On December 16, 1883 he married Ona Evans in Denton County, Texas. There they had three children while in Texas, and then moved to Oregon, where they had seven more children.
He was a carpenter, and according to the 1910 US Federal Census he worked in a lumber mill.
He lived in Oregon over 20 years, the last 10 years at 515 Philidelphia Street, St. Johns.
He died at 12:45 a.m. on December 4, 1914. The cause of death is listed as "Uremic Coma with complications from Valvulas Lesion of Heart and Apoplexy".

John P. Mayes [sic], of St. Johns, Dies.
St. Johns, OR., Dec 2. - (Special.) - John P. Mayes died yesterday at his home, 515 Philadelphia Street, St. Johns, aged 58. He is survived by a widow and ten children, and was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Knights of Pythias. Funeral will be held tomorrow at 10 A.M. from the Christian Church, and the interment will be made in the Mount Scott Park Cemetery.
