Darby McCarty

Darby was born about 1716 and died after 1787.[1]

Darby married Hannah before 1736, when their oldest son James was born.[1] Darby and Hannah McCarty also had daughters named Hannah (married William Wilson) and Mary (married Paul Froman, Jr.).[2]

"Darby McCarty, late of Bucks Co., Pensa" was in Augusta County, Virginia in 1748.[3]

Children

The following list should be checked against the entries in the Bible of James McCarty[1] (see also Location Notes, below)

Research Notes

Darby is not a son of Timothy McCarty. The name of Darby's father is not known. There is no original source for his father being Timothy.

There is a lot of misinformation about Darby McCarty and his family out there. Anyone interested in finding the truth is welcome to contact me at Mc4570[at]aol.com

Location Notes

Bucks, Philadelphia, and Chester were created in 1682 as original counties of Penn's colony.[8]
The survey showing Darby McCarty in Virginia in 1748[3] shows him below the Frederick County/Augusta County line. Those counties were formed from Orange County (1738-1745), with Augusta County to the south of Frederick County.[9]

The 1748 land survey is online at, click on page 525 to see the map where Darby McCarty lived. The meets and bounds of the survey is on Page 524.

http://image.lva.virginia.gov/LONN/NN-5/291-2/501-527.html

Washington County was formed from Fincastle County, 1776/77 (Fincastle had been formed from Botetourt County in 1772 & Botetourt had been formed from Augusta County, 1769/70).[9]
In 1778, Dunmore County (created from Frederick County in 1772) was renamed Shenandoah County.[9]

Richardson?

Although DAR names Darby's wife as "Hannah Richardson", this needs to be collaborated. (The DAR online database does not show the source for "Richardson" and her parents are not named.)[2]

There is a marriage on record for a Darby Carty and Hannah Richardson on 4 July 1736. However, it has never been proven that this relates to our ancestor.

1. The Rev. Andrews of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, PA recorded a marriage for a Darby Carty and a Hannah Richardson in his ledger on 4 July 1736. It doesn’t give the location of the marriage or where Darby or Hannah are from. The ledger could be the type carried in a saddlebag. It could have been outside of Philadelphia, PA.

2. We know that our ancestors Darby and Hannah McCarty lived in Frederick / Shenandoah County, VA in 1748, and at some point before that, had some connection to (“were late of”) Bucks County, PA. But it does not mean they lived there in 1736, specifically. They could have lived in France in 1736 for all we know.

3. When the 1736 marriage record was discovered, about 1954, in the book “Penn marriages before 1810”, it was incorrectly assumed that there was only one Darby McCarty. However, there were several people named Darby McCarty, one of whom was known to live in the area where the marriage may have taken place, and another who was known to be married to a Hannah.

4. There is no known verified source of our Hannah’s maiden name. It’s not in their Bible, or any known will or probate record. She has no known brothers or sisters. There are no historical records or histories that list her maiden name written before 1954.

5. The marriage doesn’t take place before our Darby and Hannah McCarty have their first child. Most couples are married before they have children. Yes there are exceptions, but those exceptions are rare.

All I ask for is proof this marriage record is for this Darby and Hannah McCarty. What I want to know is the maiden name of my ancestor Hannah. Not just assume this marriage could be for her.

hmm. Of interest: The survey calls George Neal "late of Shannandoah" ... and the survey is dated 10 March 1747/8. When identifying others' former residences, Mr. Green includes County (Westmoreland County, Bucks County), so we're ok there (Shenandoah County made an appearance in 1778).

I wonder if "Valley" was dropped? From Wikipedia's article on Shenandoah County:

Colonial Governor Gooch formally purchased the entire Shenandoah Valley from the Six Nations of the Iroquois by the Treaty of Lancaster in 1744.

That works well with survey/new settlements in 1748.

Once his duplicate profiles are merged, you'll need to merge the duplicates for his children.

Thanks!

Hi! McCarty-313 & McCARTY-159 are obviously intended to represent the same person, so they need to be merged. I've reproposed the merge, but I also protected McCarty-313 because it is in the correct format. That will also prevent Timothy from remaining attached as father (well, should - I've seen PPP not prevent the attachment of a parent also). I've edited the text in McCarty-313 to include a link to him.

So... Please merge.

Thanks!

McCarty-313 and McCARTY-159 are not ready to be merged because: Before we merge our trees we should compare our two trees as we have some very different information. It would be best to do this by email. My address is [email address removed] Thank you Mike McCarty
