Biography

James was born in 1895, the son of James McIntosh and Frances Baxter. [1] [2] [3] [4]

"James McIntosh (was) born May 6th, 1895 in Newberry, S.C. When he was five years old his family moved to Columbia where he attended private schools. He then entered the Citadel in Charleston, but transferred to the University of S.C. graduating in the class of 1915; then he attended McFeat-Bowen Business College. He entered the banking world with employment at the Union National Bank of Columbia. On May 14th, 1917 he entered Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. Officers Training Camp, but due to physical disability he received an Honorable Discharge July 5th. 1917. Upon return to Columbia he was employed by the Carolina National Bank, later known as the South Carolina National Bank, the largest as well as the oldest bank in S.C. He organized and served as the first president of the American Institute of Banking; was the State vice president of the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers; served on Executive Committee of S.C. Bankers Association and served as representative of S.C. National Bank, calling on banks of the State. In 1958 as assistant vice president, he retired from the S.C. National Bank after 41 years of service.
"He was active in the work of the First Presbyterian Church having served as deacon, elder and is now elder emeritus. He served as secretary as well as chairman of the Board of Deacons and as chairman of various committees of the church. He was director and treasurer of the S.C. Mental Health Assn. for six years and also served on the Richland County Mental Health Board. He was director and treasurer of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce for nine years. After serving several terms on the U.S.O. Council, he was made a Life Member. He held membership in the following: Bachelor's Club, Executives Club, Tarantella, Cotillion, Ridgewood Country Club and the Forest Lake Country Club.
"He married Elizabeth Peay, September 19th 1936 in Purity Presbyterian Church, Chester, S.C. [6] [7] which was then her home.

James passed away on 25 Feb 1983 [8] and he and his wife Elizabeth are buried at First Presbyterian Churchyard in Columbia, South Carolina. [9]
