Biography

This profile is part of the Meredith Name Study.
Bradley Meredith was born about 1730 in or near Hanover County, Virginia, as estimated from his first appearance in the record of Louisa County, Virginia.[1]
Bradley is usually found in records with James Meredith, and Junor Meredith, who are assumed to be his close relatives.
Bradley's reputation suffers from his failure to support his patriot neighbors in Henry County during the American Revolution and the claims of personal assault by his wife, Dorothy.
In 1777, Bradley Meredith refused to take the Oath of Allegiance in Henry County, Virginia, which was otherwise sworn by James Meredith (Sen.), Junor Meredith, and William Meredith. As punishment for his fealty to the English Crown, Bradley Meredith was taxed double in 1778 and triple in 1779. He was taxed normally again in 1780.
In Mar 1780, Dorothy Meredith, as sworn in court, conceives that she is in danger of her life, which is threatened by her husband, Bradley Meredith. To guarantee her safety, Bradley was taken into custody and required to post a bond of £1,000, including £500 in cash, which must have been an extremely large sum at that time.[2] Dorothy Meredith was taxed as the head of her household in 1788, indicating a marital split Bradley before that year.
Bradley passed away sometime after 1796 when he is last found in the tax records of Henry County, Virginia.
