Unproven Identity

The name, birth and parentage of Gershom Lockwood's first wife is not known. She was not Anne Millington, the daughter of Sir Thomas Millington (abt.1628-1704). See Research Notes.

Biography

Her birth and parentage are unknown; even her identify as "Ann Millington" is disputed. Robert Charles Anderson (2005) called Gershom Lockwood's first wife, "_____ _____."[1] She died before 1697 (he married again).[2]

She married before say 1663, Gershom2 Lockwood. Daniel Mead (1857) referred to him as "the principal carpenter and builder in the town of Greenwich."[3] Gershom was born in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 6 September 1643, the son of Robert Lockwood and his wife, Susanna Norman.[4] In 1672 Gershom and his family lived at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut Colony.[5] Gershom Lockwood died there, 12 March 1718/9.[6]

Not Ann Millington, daughter of Sir Thomas Millington (abt.1628-1704). DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Almost 2-1/2 years ago, Jill posted, "Ann Millington's origins are unknown and she isn't the daughter of Thomas and Ann ...", and yet this profile remains associated as the daughter of Thomas and Ann.

Now that reasonably sourced profiles exist for Sir Thomas Millington, his wife and their children (including daughter Ann), I plan to sever the association between this Ann and her parents.

Also, a couple of years ago, a match between Millington-12 and this Millington-554 was rejected. Once Millington-554 has been severed from her now linked father, I plan to set a match between -12 and -554.

If anyone feels these changes will have been premature, please post, so that we may collaborate further.--Gene

It would be a great service to many genealogist if the Millington myth could be resolved. There are bad connections through Ann Milignton going back to English Tudor Royal lines. If a person's lineage is questionable or unknown it should be clearly stated as Unproven. The Google thread about Millington is interesting and there are some good references. However, The Jacobus book on the Lockwoods has been shown to be completely unreliable and and should not be used as a reference. It has fouled up the Lockwood genealogy almost beyond repair.

Hi John, I have no problem with you taking on the task of resolving this myth with sources supporting your comment. I was added as profile manager in Nov 2021 and would appreciate all the help you are willing to give to improve this profile of one of my many 10th gg's through her daughter Hannah.

I do not feel it is my place to remove her parents at this time because I did not create this profile or add the references shown. I did notice that there is nothing marked for the parents (uncertain or certain).

I don't think the person who added the parents is active on WT anymore, but maybe we should give them a chance to comment within a timely manner.

Not to further complicate profile connections, there's Millington-12 and Lockwood-1. I also would like to resolve this.

Hi John Betts,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Gershom Lockwood married his first wife by about 1663 (birth of child). She died before 3 August 1697 (he married again).

English court records prove that Gershom Lockwood's first wife was not and could not have been Ann, the daughter of Sir Thomas Millington, MD--he was born Newbury, Berkshire, England, about 1628, died London, England, 5 January 1703/4. He married in 1680 to the widow Anne Hannah King. Sir Thomas and his wife were the parents of three children--Ann Millington, Mary Millington and Thomas Millington.

Sir Thomas' daughter Ann Millington was born after 1680 and died 11 March 1743/4. Her estate was the subject of an English court case in which detailed genealogical notes and records were produced and litigated.

See "Dr. Bouchier against Horngold and Others" in Joseph Phillmore, Reports of cases argued and determined in the Arches and Prerogative Courts of Canterbury, and in the High Court of Delegates ..., 2 vols. (1832-33), 1:515-525; digital images, Hathi Trust.

WikiTree has at least two profiles describing Ann (Millington) Lockwood.

  • Millington-12 - She is linked as both a daughter of Sir Thomas Millington and as the wife of Gershom Lockwood; she is the mother of five Lockwood children.
  • Millington-554 -She is linked as the daughter of "Lord Thomas Millington M.D.,"  and was at one time also linked as the wife Gershom Lockwood. In 2016 and 2018, that association was severed, but she remains linked as the mother of two Lockwood children--Hannah (Lockwood) Hanford and Abraham Lockwood.

IF the original intent was that both Millington-12 and -554 should be the wife of Gershom Lockwood, then their associations as daughters of Sir Thomas should be severed. When that has been done, the further work to resolve conflicts and merge those profiles can begin. When the profiles are merged, folks can determine whether or not Gershom's first wife was "Ann Millington" or ______ ______.

In the mean time, then a new, valid profile about Sir Thomas' daughter can be attached to his profile.

Thanks -- Gene
