Biography

Jehan was a Walloon signer of the 1621 Round Robin petition, promising "to go into Virginia and there to live in the same condition as others of His Majesty's subjects, but in a town of incorporation by themselves"

An interesting discussion of Johannes can be found at the Society of the Descendants of Johannes de la Montagne. Note: According to this his parents both were Unknown

Name: Jean "Johannes" Mousnier de Surname: (de) la Monta(i)gne Sex: M
Birth: 1595 in Saintes, Saintogne, France Death: 1670 in Claverack, New York , he was a Physician
"Walloons and French to Virginia, 1621 Promise of certain “Walloons and French to emigrate to Virginia. In the centre of a large sheet of paper was written in French: We promise my Lord Ambassador of the Most Serene King of Great Britain to go and inhabit in Virginia, a land under his Majesty’s obedience, as soon as conveniently may be, and this under the conditions to be carried out in the articles we have communicated to the said Ambassador, and not otherwise, on the faith of which we have unanimously signed this present with our sign manual. The signatures and the calling of each are appended in the form of a round robin, and in a outer circle the person signing states whether he is married, and the number of his children. Endorsed by Sir Dudley Carleton, Signature of such Wallons and French as offer themselfs to goe into Verginia."
Two of these names were:
  1. Mousnier de la Montagne, medical student; marrying man
  2. Mousnier de la Montagne, apothecary and surgeon; marrying man[1]
In the New Netherlands, Jean Mousnier De La Montagne was generally referred to as Doctor Johannes De La Montagne. His excellent education and high natural abilities enabled him to take and important place in the community. On Manhattan, he set up business as a physician and as a chandler. Henry De Forest died soon after arrival, and Dr. Montagne was forced to take charge of the De Forest tobacco plantation in mid-Manhattan. Eventually, Dr. Montagne assumed the proprietorship of the property, living on it with his family and producing a profitable crop of tobacco. The farm, called "Vrendendahl", included much of the upper half of what is now Central Park in New York City. He was driven off the land by Indians and lived thereafter near the fort at New Amsterdam. He was the offical surgeon of New Amsterdam, Frist Councillor (continuously from: 1638-1656) for both Director Kieft and Director Stuyvesant, military commander of the troops on Manhattan Island 1640-1656, and a member of several peace commissions with the Indians.
Dr. Montagne was appointed Vice-Director of the colony from 1656-1664, with special responsibility for Fort Orange (Albany) and the Dutch settlement at Beverwyck. This made Dr. Montagne the chief administrator for a large area, including all the Dutch and Huguenot settlements in the Hudson valley.
With the English take-over of the colony in 1664, Dr. Montagne dropped out of offical records, as an official of the Dutch West Indies Company, he had to resign as Vice-Director. He did sign a loyalty oath to the new British government and it is believed that he accompanied Peter Stuyvesant back to Holland in 1665 to defend the surrender of the colony. It is assumed that he returned to New York in 1668 like Peter Stuyesant. It also assumed that he died in Claverack, New York in 1670 because his son, Jean dropped the use of Junior that year.
Note: This part mentioned in many if not all genealogies , seems to be wrong : In 1628, Jean de la Montagne left with is young bride, de Forest's daughter Rachel, on the "Fortuyn" for the island of Tobago, a Dutch possession in the Windward Islands, northwest of Guiana. His wife returned to Leyden in 1631, supposedly enfeebled by the climate of this Caribbean Isle. Her husband probably returned in 1633 and appears on the register of the University of Leyden for the third time in 1636.
This seems to be incorrect if not impossible, both Jean and his wife Rachel where witnesses at the baptism of Child in Leiden in August 1628 and their son Josse (Jesse) was born/baptized May 6, 1629 in Leiden as well .

Here's a list of those who were registered at University of Leiden with description, "Xanto", "Santo", etc. including the five occasions on which Jean Mousnier de La Montagne was registered. I think it clears up any misgivings that Xanto, etc, represented anything other than "Saintonge". Whether of not this designation might include a larger area then that being historically defined as being strictly in the Province of Saintonge is another question.

There are several branches in the Netherlands as well as in New Netherland, using many different versions of the last name, there's also a version without the prepositions (le , la , de or de la) they used, so just Montaigne, or in New Netherland Montanye, Montayne, etc.

I added Jesse as child of Johannes and Angniet, he was connected to father (so as his sibling) but he was born in 1653 and since the father isn't correct and because of his Birthdate, he probably was more likely son of Jehan and Angnietje (she would have been 42 y of age) And according the info in his Bio , they had a son Gillis and a son Jesse..

I also received a mail from Cynthia Kay she mentioned the book The Courtright (Kortright) Family: Descendants of Bastian Van Kortryk shows he was their son as well (Jesse de la Montagne born in 1653 in New Amsterdam (now New York) ) this date matched our Jesse , so he now is attached to them as their son... Thanks Cynthia ;)

I think she was added by accident as his mother instead of his wife , but everything is accurate again now ... ;)

This is why we have Project Profile Protection with only the Project as active manager in the COGH project - the parentage cannot merely be changed, because a safety / protective "grid" is created.

@Carrie , did you see this new mother is the whole mixed up lineage again we just had untangled a while ago ? See Angniet Gillis (Ten Waert)

The father isn't correct as well, but we have the unverified father template added for him, so I think we have to disconnect this mother again and merge her with the Angniet Gillis which is his wife, correct and where we have found sources for ... ?

Angniet Gillis (ten Waert) wasn't his mother but his wife, and it all is corrected now again..looking now I guess you just by accident added the wrong husband to her eeh ?

Looking at all the records we were able to find so far, it looks like the actual last name was Mousnier, so if we would like to find his ancestors or possible parents we have to search for a family named Mousnier instead of de la Montagne , Montaigne or other versions. Added something about the last name as well now, it means miller , so maybe his father or ancestors were millers or owned a mill in or near Lille Wallonia where it is suspected they actually were from.

Here's a list of Students born before 1600 Studenten geboren voor 1600 (alphabetical order) (Monier, Montagne and Montanus are mentioned, but no Jo(h)annes , Jehan or Jean born in France)

Added unverified father template, see his father as well, he is said to be a son of the famous Michel de la Montaigne, but... to Michel and his wife only 6 daughters were born and only one of these daughters, Leonor stayed alive (became an adult) see: Michel de Montaigne
