The origins and parents of John Mullins/Mullyns are unknown. His birth year is estimated at about 1546,[1] assuming he was about aged 25 at his 1571 marriage.
John married Joane Bridger on 8 July 1571 at Dorking, Surrey.[1][2][3] This is the first appearance of John Mullins in Dorking records.[1]
John was a shoemaker in Dorking, and was named as such in a fine dated 8 October 1577.[1]
The Dorking parish registers have a large break between the years 1572 and 1578, during which John and Joan would have had children.[1] However, Mayflower researcher Caleb Johnson confidently lists the following as children of the couple:
William, born in Dorking about 1672, died at Plymouth 21 February 1620/1; married Alice ____ and had 5 children[1]
Margaret, born ca. 1580, buried 5 August 1611 at Dorking, married John Gardiner and had a son[1]
Edward, baptized 23 September 1582 in Dorking;[4] "the son of widow Mullins" was buried at Dorking on 8 July 1584 (presumed to be Edward)[1]
John Mullins was buried on 4 February 1583/4 in Dorking. His widow, Joan, remarried to Vincent Benham on 1 November 1585 and they had a daughter together. Joan was buried at Dorking 5 February 1608/9.[1]
Research Notes
Unknown Origins
John's parents are unknown. There are claims on the internet that his parents were John Mullins and Joanna Montage, of Warnham, Sussex, but there is no known evidence to support this.
