Soon after their marriage, they emigrated to Stamford, Vermont for about three years, before settling in Hebron, New York. It was while they lived in Vermont, that he fought in the Revolutionary War.[2]

"John was about twenty-three years of age at the time of the migration to Hebron. While in Hamden he was a member of the 17th Company, 2nd Regt. He was among the citizens of Hebron who are known to have been soldiers in the Revolution; he was promoted from the office of 2nd lieut. in Wilson's Co. March 16, 1781. His elder brother, Moses T., sought to win him from the cause of the patriots to that of King George."[3]
