Penelope, the daughter of Robert Naunton, Master of the Court of Wards and Liveries, and his wife Penelope Perrot was baptised 2 October 1620 at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster.[1] She married Paul Bayning, son of Paul, Viscount Bayning and his wife, Anne Glemham, in 1634. [2] Her father-in-law died in 1629 and Penelope's husband, still very young, became the 2nd Viscount Bayning. [3]
Their marriage had two daughters: First, Anne, who married Aubrey de Vere, 20th Earl of Oxford - b. 1 May 1637; m. 18 June 1647; d. perhaps 1659. Second, Penelope, who married Hon John Herbert - b. after her father's death on 11 June 1638; m. 6 June 1651; bur. 1 May 1657 at the Chapel of St John the Baptist, Westminster Abbey. Both sisters were interred in the same place. Both died childless. [4]
Paul Bayning died 11 December 1638. After a year of widowhood Penelope married Philip Herbert, son of Philip 4th Earl of Pembroke and his wife, Susan de Vere, on 28 March 1639 at St Martin Vintry, London. [5] She bore him a son, William, before her death in 1647. [3]
Some sources have listed the marriage date of Penelope Naunton and Paul Bayning as 25 August 1624. No primary evidence for this date has been shown, however, although there is a secondary transcript showing 1634 and evidence exists to show that the marriage had at least taken place by 1634. While very early marriages were common at this time, the 1620 birthdate of Penelope would have made her four years of age in 1624, which is extreme. Paul Bayning's Will was dated 1634, and the Will of Penelope's father names her as "Lady Bayning" in that year. [6] It thus seems conceivable that a transcription error might have resulted in a change in the record from 1624 to 1634.
ETA: Which it appears must have happened, as Cokayne in his Corrigenda changed the date to 1634 and the place to Suffolk. [7] Also, in a letter of 1 April 1634, G. Garrard to the Lord Deputy (Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, who was Lord Deputy General of Ireland at the time) refers to "the Master of the Wards hath concluded a Match betwixt his only daughter and the Lord Bayning" [8]
