John was born and raised on the Grand River.[1] In 1826 he married Rachel Cockcroft at Chippewa and settled there, near to his wife's three siblings.[2]
In 1831 he would hire a young farmhand recently arrived in Upper Canada by the name of Orlando Rutherford. Orlando had only worked for Nelles for a couple of months when the death of John's brother in law James required John to replace Orlando with an orphaned nephew.[3] Rachel's other brother, Dr. Lonsdale Cockcroft would die six months later, and not long after, the family moved back to the Grand River.[4]
John himself would die at the young age of 44, leaving behind a wife and four children under the age of fourteen.[5]
John served in the Canadian Militia as a Captain about 1830.[6]
