Judge Nelson, of the District Court, died at age 59, and was buried in Yorktown. He is known as "Uncle Judge Billy" and "Col. William Nelson", of Oakland, Hanover Co., Va. He firat married, about 1779, Miss Taliaferro, of James City County, Va, and had one child, Elizabeth (called Betsy) Nelson who married Edwards. He married secondly, Abby, daughter of Col. William E. Byrd, of Westover, on James River, Charles County, Va., and Mary Willing, of Philadelphia, Pa., his wife.
William and his brother, Robert, were captured by British troopers under Tarleton, at Castle Hill, the residence of Dr. Thomas Walker, Albemarle Co., Va., during the war of the American Revolution.
Judge William Nelson and his wife, Abby, had the following children:
1. Mary Nelson who married Pickens of South Carolia 2. Abby Byrd Nelson 3. Evelyn Byrd Nelson who married William Byrd Page, of Pagebrook, Clarke Coounty, Va. 4. Lucy Nelson who married Harrison, of Berkeley (Harrison's Landing) on the James River, Charles City County, Va. 5. Rosalie Nelson
