Biography

James Neville was born about 1640, possibly in Clefts, Calvert, Maryland, son of John Neville and Bridget Thorsley.[citation needed]

He married about 1660 Elizabeth or Margaret O'Canny in Northampton, Virginia.[citation needed]

He died between 1696-1700 in Neville's Creek-Rowan River Valley, Rowan, North Carolina. Others, without source, claim he died in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

Children included:

James Neville (b. 1640 - d. btw 1696 - 1700) and his wife Elizabeth are believed to have died at the hands of Native Americans. The couple were probably married in Northampton, Virginia, before moving to the Isle of Wight in March of 1674.

Research Notes

Land Patents

  • 26 Mar 1662, James Nevil: 1300 acres in Northampton County at the seaboard side being a neck or island bounding easterly by Matchepunco River...[1]
  • 5 Mar 1674, John Nevell: 100 acres in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County adjoining to a greater tract of Dunkin Bohannan. The said land being formerly due Dunkin Bohannan by purchase from Mr. Armestead and then sold to the father of the above said John Nevell as son and heir of his dec'd. father. .[2]

The 1674 patent suggests that James was deceased by March, 1674.

Notes from my Dad's research on James, one of my 8th Great Grandfathers: 1660 - 1661, he settled in North Hampton County, Virginia. 3/22/1662, he obtained a warrant there for 1300 acres. James later moved to I.O.W. Co. 3/6/1674. He purchased 100 acres of land in Gloucester County, Virginia for his son John. James moved to Neville's Creek in Bath, Beaufort County, North Carolina. On 11/2/1711 James, his wife and son Richard were killed in an Indian Massacre of settlers. James had 11 known children.
Several "Citation needed" markers were recently deleted from this profile with no citations being added. Do the general sources cited support all of the claims in the profile? If so, it would be helpful if inline citations could be added to show which sources support which claims (ideally with page numbers, as most of these sources all appear to be lengthy books).

This gives info on James and an unsavory story of his Father, John and info. on his Mother. Says he was born in 1655 which would change who his mother is based on marriage dates on John's record? Mentions his wife as Dorothy?

My source says he died in 1711 in Neville's Creek, New Bern, Craven, North Carolina. I added several sources to help find more information on him and the family. Another source, FamilySearch says 11/2/1711 https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L6M2-VZC (I know they are not always 100% accurate but has some helpful information to check out.
added project account for US Southern Colonies Project but removed PPP (doesn't meet PPP requirements - see Space:US_Southern_Colonies_Managed_Profile_Requests for details).

Neville-299 and Neville-89 appear to represent the same person because: 299 is totally unsourced; 89 has good sources; please merge away the unsourced and inaccurate 299 into 89. Thank you.

Neville-1918 and Neville-89 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same people, and are shown being married to the same person.
