Robert Nicholas Sr is Notable.

The Honorable Robert Carter Nicholas, Sr., Esquire, was a Virginia lawyer, patriot, legislator, and judge. He served in the Virginia House of Burgesses and its successor, the Virginia House of Delegates. He became the last treasurer of the Colony of Virginia, and sat on the first High Court of Chancery, one of the predecessors of the Supreme Court of Virginia.[1]

Robert Carter Nicholas was born on 28 January 1729 in Hanover County, Virginia. His parents were Dr. George Nicholas and Elizabeth (Carter) Nicholas. Robert was named after his paternal grandfather, Robert ["King"] Carter. Robert's mother, Elizabeth, was Robert "King" Carter's eldest daughter. She had previously been married to Nathaniel Burwell, who died, and secondly married Dr. George Nicholas, Robert's father (who came from "a very good and ancient family" in England, became physician to the governor of the Colony of Virginia not long after his arrival, was a Justice of the Peace for Gloucester County, and was also appointed the very first burgess to represent the College of William and Mary at the General Assembly).

Both of Robert's parents died within a few months of each other in 1734 when Robert was just a young boy five years of age, and his uncle was appointed his guardian. Robert was affectionately nicknamed "Robin" by his family members in his youth.

Robert married Anne Cary, the second born of the quartet of famously beautiful and accomplished daughters of Colonel Wilson Cary and Sarah (Pate) Cary. Anne's father, Colonel Cary, was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and had inherited one of Virginia's largest fortunes and the family estate, a plantation called Ceelys, which was situated on the James River three or four miles from Hampton.[2][3] Thus, two Virginia families of great wealth and standing were joined when Robert and Anne married.

Robert and Anne had four daughters and six sons; seven of their children survived to adulthood. Most of their sons became lawyers, as was their father, and some served in the legislature. The best known of their sons was Miles Cary Nicholas, who served in the United States Senate from 1799 to 1804 and became the 19th governor of Virginia, serving a term from 1814 to 1816.[4]

"6-3. Anne, b. 1736 ; m. 1752, Hon. Robert Carter Nicholas, son of Dr. George and Elizabeth (Carter-Burwell) Nicholas, and had issue. (See Carter and Burwell lineage.)"[5]
