Disputed Existence

Her existence as a full-blood Wampanoag Indian stems from a manuscript "published" through the Library of Congress (i.e., submitted there by the author) back in the early 1930s.[1] But despite being soundly debunked in the mid 1930s by Jacobus, the fraud persists, "supported" by sources that are themselves highly questionable.[2]

Myth:

  • Supposedly born before 1610 in Gay Head, Martha's Vineyard, MA[3]
  • Supposedly daughter of Epanow Wampanoag.
  • Supposedly died 1624 in Cape Cod, Barnstable, Massachusetts,
  • Supposedly married to John Hyanno bef 1625[4] in Cummaquid, Massachusetts (Barnstable)

Nopee seems to come from the name of the town Nope. Still researching.

You'll find links to the infamous manuscript here: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hyanno-1#_note-0 but if this Franklin Bearce ms is the only and oldest source for her existence, then we should give her the

template. As for the LDS listing this as fact, that's kinda like saying the library lists it as fact. Where in all the vast collections of the LDS is it listed as fact? They did apparently publish Bearce's fraud in the mid 1930s but Jacobus soundly refuted it in 1938. This profile mentions the infamous Millennium File and Gene pool databases at Ancestry. Those are wholly unreliable.

Please read my comment on posted on 11/3/15. Almost all of the profile managers know and understand your comments. You may try to start to undo this Myth at the LDS Library. They have it listed as Fact based on the 'Manuscript'. (No manuscript has been posted ever). Good Luck with that!

I have no idea who this person is supposed to be or where she came from. I have voiced my opinion of the Bearse - Indian "connection" many times. As far as I am concerned, the entire line from Austin Bearse's wife Mary back should be eliminated or at least be disconnected and a VERY strong warning as to its lack of proof posted in the profiles.
What documentation supports her existence, please? Thanks.

It seems that one of the 'Source' is a Manuscript at The Library of Congress. In a letter to the Bearce Family (on line) there is no manuscript, only two letters. Franklyn Bearce could not document any of his claims. To this date, most of researchers haven't found any documentation. If the Manuscript exists, it would help to download it to a pdf file that can be uploaded for all to read.
