Biography

William, son of Gilbert de Notton.[1]

William de Notton was lord of Breightmet in the parish of Bolton-le-Moors, and, following the death of her brother, his wife Cecily was heir of her mother, Edith, in Barton.[2]

Circa 1200, William and Cecily confirmed a grant to Mobberley, which had been made by Cecily's uncle Patrick, with the assent of her father [Ormerod, Ches. i, 422]. [3]

In 1202, William and his father Gilbert contributed to the third scutage of King John and to the aid levied that year, in respect of their thanelands [Pipe Rolls, pp. 55, 152]. [4]

He is named in the Inquest of Lancashire, taken in 1212, as lord of Breightmet, which estate probably descended to his younger son, Matthew, whose heir was Avina, who married Sir William de Samlesbury of Samlesbury, and Harewood, to whose daughters and coheirs this estate descended.

He died before 16 Oct 1220; his heir was under age and in the ward of Robert Grelley at this time. [5]

Marriage

m. (abt. 1200) Cecily (d. bef. 1222), dau. of Edith, Lady of Barton (d. 1222).[1] She carried to him the manor of Barton, and also in right of her father that of Breightmet. [6]

I suspect that it passed to Matthew de Notton, a younger son of William, and that Avina was his daughter and heir. But this lacks confirmation."
