Biography

Charles E. was the elder of the two sons of Sabrina and John Odell. He was born Dec. 20, 1850, in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the public schools in Cleveland. In 1861 his father moved to Washington, D. C., where Charles attended school for five years. The family returned to Cleveland. Charles graduated from the Central High School. He was then appointed a clerk in the Cleveland Post Office and served in the money order department for several years.

He married Margaretta Kavanaugh Oct. 12, 1873. She was the daughter of P. K. and Ellen Kavanaugh, and was born July 17, 1857, in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Odell engaged in business with the Gordon Real Estate Co.

He united with Bethany Presbyterian Church and soon became a ruling elder in the church, assistant superintendent of the Sabbath School, and president of the Men's Club of the church. He was an earnest, faithful worker in these offices and had the love and respect of all associated with him. Even after disease had compelled him to give up work he retained his interest in the church and its members. From his sick bed frequent messages were sent by him to individual members, encouraging and advising them. And in the public services of the church and Sunday School for many weeks few prayers were offered in which his name was not mentioned and God's blessing upon him invoked.

His sufferings were born with patience, and there was a quiet resignation to his Heavenly Father's will -- a desire to live and serve, or a willingness to depart, as God willed. But on Dec. 9th, 1910, after months of intense suffering, the summons came, and

"Then the glad waking, Where heaven is breaking; Newness of life 'over there'."
