Notes

The middle name Gideon has been added to Israel in many trees and on Family Search. It has been removed here until some verifiable source can prove that it is correct.

There is a project underway to verify this family and provide better sources. Please do not make changes until contacting one of the profile managers.

Walt Steesy and Dave Mason thank you for helping us

The family used the Olmsted form of the surname in Massachuetts, it appears that Israel (may have) changed to Olmstead after leaving there.

I also doubt he was married to Elizabeth Haskins

I believe Israel assumed the name Gideon on arrival in Canada, however there is no document showing this was his middle name. According to the land petition of Elizabeth, he died before Apr 1797 and most likely in Canada. Children attributed to him after she married Fairchild in Apr 1797 are incorrect.

Janet/Walter;

I too agree that Ontario looks much more likely than North Carolina, however, I see there is a photo here of Israel that does reference North Carolina.....uploaded by James Martin... I wonder what the story behind that is.....

If this Israel is in fact the one mentioned in the 1795 land petition there may be some UEL records to assist in proof.....

Janet,

I agree as I have trouble with the North Carolina death location -- more likely an Ontario, Canada location.

The four youngest children were born in Canada, see source listed under wife, Elizabeth Haskins. If this Israel died in North Carolina, is it possible we are dealing with two Israels??
It is possible his son Israel was born in Vermont. The children attached do not agree with the list in his biography. If documents are found to verify birth please attach and we will update this.

Why different birthplaces for the children and wasn't there an Isreal Olmsted from Vermont?
posted by Sheri Havens
Olmstead-526 and Olmsted-398 appear to represent the same person because: Correct spelling of the surname is Olmsted without the "a" though at this time all of the profiles for the children have been established as Olmstead waiting for more documentation to be found.
