There has been considerable confusion over the spelling of the family name, especially in the 1600s & 1700s. All early records of the "root ancestor" Capt. Jabez Olmsted of Ware, Mass. use the family name without the "a"; at various times descendants have changed to the Olmstead or Omstead version of the name.
Served under Colonels David Brewer, Rufus Putnam, Benj Simonds, Joseph Vose Vose-229 1st MA. [1]
