Elijah Olmsted is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A200796.

Lt. Elijah Olmsted was born on 1 May 1743 in Enfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut. He was the son of Joseph Olmstead and Martha White.

He married Sarah Terry (31 Jan 1742-29 Aug 1805), daughter of Jonathan Terry and Sara Pease, on 3 Dec 1767 in Tolland, Connecticut. They had 10 children:

  1. Sarah (died young)
  2. Sarah (died in infancy)
  3. Elijah, b. 6 Mar 1772, d. 10 Mar 1848
  4. Erastus, b. 1773, d. 1851
  5. Unknown (died young)
  6. Joseph
  7. Walter, b. 1777, d. 1849
  8. Harry
  9. Sarah, b. 1781, d. 1862
  10. David.

He served in the Revolutionary War, first in Maj. Backus’ Regiment of Light Horse within Capt. Loomis’ Company for 57 days between September and October, 1776. In October, 1781 he was promoted to Lieutenant in the 5th Company of Alarm in the 19th Regiment of Connecticut. By 1787 he sold his land in Connecticut and moved the family to Middlebury, Addison Co., Vermont. He owned Lots 11 and 12 of the second division, placing his house on Lot 12.

Sarah died on 8/29/1805 in Addison County, Vermont.

In 1814 Elijah sold his lots and moved to live with his son Harry in Moriah, Essex Co., New York. Harry’s 1820 census shows a male over the age of 45 was still living with him, therefore Elijah likely died after 1820.
