Miles Parker was born in Gates County about 1760. He married Mary Tugwell on May 5, 1748. A division of land in 1822 list his children and the same land as described in Demsey Parker's deed. Gates County is divided into two geographical regions. The western half is leval
farmland which grows tobacco and cotton. The eastern coastal plains contains the Dismal Swamp and forest. It is connected to Albemarle Sound by the Chowan River. Under it's original charter 1n 1663, the colony of North Carolina boundries were set by England's King Charles
II to reach to the west to the "South Seas" -The name used by the English for the Pacific Ocean. The Enlish prized the coastal plains of North Carolina because of the the virgin frest of Long-leafed Pine trees. The rosin from these trees was used for pine tar to caulk the ships hulls. The new colonist nickname became "tarheels".
