Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Edward Parrish II was a Maryland colonist.

Edward Parish is presumed to be the son of the Edward Parish who died intestate in Anne Arundel County around 1680 because he mentions land claimed by the earlier Edward in his will.[1] His birth year is estimated around 1665 based on the year of death of his father and the fact that he identifies several grandchildren in his will.

Property

On 25 AUG 1697 Edward Parrish of Anne Arundel County, planter, conveyed to George Ogg, planter of the same county, for £42 current money, 300 acres part of a 2,000 acre tract surveyed for Edward Parrish’s father called Parrish’s Range at the head of the Patapsco R. on the north side of a branch called Gwins Falls. Edward’s wife, Mary signed the deed to release her dower rights.[2]

15 OCT 1697 Edward Parrish of Anne Arundel, cooper, conveyed to John Wodding of the same county, carpenter, for £36 money of England & 8 elles of brown linen a 300 acre tract being part of the 2,000 acre tract called Parrishes Range in Baltimore County standing near a stoney branch called Gwins Little Falls then west to Mathew Hawkins land laid out for 300 acres. Mary Parrish agreed to give up her dower rights in this property. The next document in the ledger states that I Edward Parrish was firmly bound unto John Wooding in the sum of £72 sterling and 16 ells of good canvas to be well & truly paid. [3]

Marriage & Family

Much can be determined about the life of Edward Parrish by studying his very detailed will. He was married at the time of his death to a woman named Mary. It is possible married more than once and the family mentioned in his will has two mothers. The will confuses the issue because he states that he has five children and then names seven. Two daughters (or step-daughters) are married with children. They are never called daughters, but their children are called his grandchildren. Edward's youngest boy is under 18. The best guess for the children is as follows:

  1. Sarah b. abt. 1690. Married -?-Norris with son named Thomas Norris. Then married John Steward with son named John.
  2. Elizabeth b. abt. 1692. Married Jacob Duhadway with 3 children: Edward, Jacob & Margaret.
  3. Edward b. abt. 1694
  4. John b. abt. 1696
  5. Mary b. abt. 1698
  6. Ann b. abt 1700
  7. William b. abt. 1714

Edward's will also reveals that he had two brothers, William and John and they both have sons which he calls cousins named Edward. This means there were three men named Edward Parrish living in Anne Arundel County in 1722. The tendency of men to name their children after their brothers makes sorting them all out very confusing.

there's a draft, so I can't fix the template without either discarding or saving it. Not knowing what the editor's intentions were, I'm not comfortable with either option.

The template needs to be moved below = Biography = and have "Sticker" added to it...

Thanks!
