Research Notes

  • [a] As was common in those less literate times, Bartholomew's first name was spelt in many different ways on different records: Bartholomew, Bartholemewe, Bathelmew, etc.
  • [b] Regarding the question of whether Bartholomew had a second wife, Anne Amyas: Bartholemew married Parnell Green in 1566, when he was 20, and Parnell died in August 1597. Bartholomew's will was dated a year later, in October 1597 and was proved 1598. The will mentions nieces, nephews, and brothers-in-law by name, but does not mention a wife. Therefore, it does not appear that he remarried after Parnell died. See summary here.
  • [c] FamilySearch.org currently (2/2/2019) and several ancestry.com trees show this Bartholomew Partridge and his wife Pernell Greene as the parents of an Elizabeth Margy Partridge born in Swimbridge, Devonshire in 1576 who later married William Mease / Mays and emigrated to Virginia; others show a similar birth date in London. It is 100% certain that the Elizabeth Partridge born in Swimbridge, Devonshire in 1576 is NOT closely related; she is the daughter of a different Bartholomew Partridge, born in North Devonshire. There seems no evidence or valid reference that Bartholomew and Pernell Partridge of Navestock, Essex (who also lived in London) ever had a daughter called Elizabeth. There were several persons named Bartholomew Partridge living around the same time; two in Devonshire, two in Essex, one or two in London and others in the north of England; and this appears to have added to confusion and mistaken assumptions.

I disconnected Anne Amyas as Barthelmew's wife, since I don't see any evidence that they were married, and no objection has been made to the proposal since I suggested it a year ago.
