Biography

Daughter of Sir Thomas Paston, MP and Anne Fitzgerald Wife of Sir Henry Newton, MP, of East Harptree Mother of Sir Theodore Newton, of Barr's Court; Elizabeth Newton; John Newton; Margaret Newton and Anne Newton Sister of Henry Paston; Edward Paston, and William Paston Half sister of Douglas Aungier; Thomas Fitzgerald; Dudley Fitzgerald; Lettice Fitzgerald and Gerald Fitzgerald, 14th Earl of Kildare. About Catherine Newton KATHERINE PASTON (d.1605) From A Who’s Who of Tudor Women: P compiled by Kathy Lynn Emerson to update and correct her very out-of-date "Wives and Daughters: The Women of Sixteenth-Century England" (1984) Katherine Paston was the daughter of Sir Thomas Paston of London (d. September 4, 1550) and Agnes Legh (d.1555+). She married Sir Henry Newton (1535-May 2, 1599) in 1560. Their children were Theodore (1589-1608), Elizabeth, Frances, Margaret, and Anne. According to David McKeen's A Memory of Honour: the life of William Brooke, Lord Cobham, she had been in Spain in the household of the duchess of Feria (Jane Dormer) but this does not seem consistent with her having begun service to Queen Elizabeth as a chamberer in 1576. She was a senior lady of the Privy Chamber by January 1598/9 when she lobbied for one of her daughters to be appointed to fill a vacancy among the maids of honor. Elizabeth Southwell was chosen for the post instead. Charlotte Merton, in The Women who served Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, says that she was frequently ill and that in 1582 she was suffering from an ague. As a widow at Barr's Court, she put up a monument to her husband in Bristol Cathedral and one to his father, Sir John Newton, in East Harptree church. Portrait: effigy. Henry Paston’s daughter Catherine married Henry Newton† Newton’s daughter Frances was married to Giles Strangways. .... Newton died at East Harptree on 2 May 1599, leaving as heir his son Theodore, aged 15. A large part of his will made in January and proved in June the same year is given up to the quotation of English and Latin texts concerned with justification and salvation by faith in Christ alone. Newton declared his steadfast hope of ‘life everlasting through the bitter death and passion of Christ’, and his wish to be buried without ‘blacks’ or any unnecessary expense. Among relatives mentioned were his brother John, his ‘base brother’ Theodore and ‘Mary his sister’. The wedding portions of his two unmarried daughters, Anne and Elizabeth, were to be provided by his brother-in-law Edward Paston and others as feoffees of two parts of his lands. Details of these are given in the inquisition taken at Taunton.7 (http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1509-1558/member/paston-sir-thomas-1517-50) Updated from Find A Grave Memorial by SmartCopy: Apr 16 2015, 9:21:00 UTC comments Not a child of Henry Newton & Katherine Paston Their only son was Theodore. I have taken over this profile to disconnect John Newton as her son. John purports to have been born before the marriage took place. And this profile states that Theodore Newton was the only child of this woman and Henry Newton. I don't know where john fits. It could be under an earlier wife of Henry. Or it could be under a completely different Newton. But it seems certain that John doesn't fit here.
