Biography

Hypolite Alfred Patin was born on 11 February 1825 in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, United States.[1]

He married Oliva Cormier on 1 May 1852 in Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish.[2]

Alfred Patin fought in the Civil War and was made a prisoner of war.[3]

After the war, he taught a public school in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. The school was operated with funds provided by the Federal government. It was located on the east side of Bayou Teche, along the present Bridge Street, in a one-room building with mud-daubed walls. The land and old building were bought for school purposes by Henry Rees and other citizens, "each contributing according to his means." At first only French was taught at Alfred Patin's school, but English was later introduced. There were about forty pupils in the school, mostly boys.[3]
