Biography

Josias Payne was born 30 October 1705, presumably in Virginia.[1][2] He was the son of George Payne and Mary Woodson.[1][3]

Josias Payne married Anne or Anna Fleming.[citation needed]

In September 1732, Josias Payne and his wife Anne sold land in Goochland County, Virginia. [3][4]

He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgess from Goochland County, Virginia, in 1761 and 1765.[5]

He died on 18 January 1785 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia,[2] and was buried in an unmarked grave at Payne Cemetery in Goochland, Goochland County, Virginia[5]

His granddaughter was Dolly Payne Madison, First Lady of USA.

• Goochland Co., VA, didn’t exist until 1727 when it was formed from Henrico Co., VA.
• St. James Northam Parish didn’t exist until 1744, when it was founded from St. James Parish in Goochland Co., VA. St. James Parish was founded in 1720 from Henrico Parish and was in Henrico Co., VA, at the time; it 1744 it was split into St. James Southam and St. James Northam parishes. [9][10]
