Henry Pelham was born 26 September 1694, at London,[1] or he may have been born circa January 1695.[2] in England.
Henry was the second surviving son of Thomas Pelham, first Baron Pelham of Laughton (Sedgwick says Thomas was 1st Baron Pelham, of Halland, Suss[2]), and his second wife Lady Grace Holles,[1] the daughter of Gilbert Holles, MP, third Earl of Clare.[2]
Henry's siblings were:
He attended Westminster School (and is now one of their famous Old Westminsters),[3] then Hart Hall (now Hertford College), Oxford,[1] at age 15.[2]
Henry's father died in 1712 and he inherited money and properties in his family’s home county of Sussex.[1] During the First Jacobite rising of 1715, Henry volunteered, commanding dragoons for the army at the Battle of Preston.[1]
Henry and his elder brother, Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, were Whigs as their family had traditionally been.[1] He was a member of parliament for Seaford in Sussex from 1717 until 1722.[2] Henry was then elected as one of the County members for Sussex and was still holding this seat when he died.[1] He was appointed a Privy Councillor in 1725.[1]
Henry married Lady Katharine Manners, daughter of John second Duke of Rutland, on 29 October. 1726.[2] [4]
Henry, son of Thomas Baron of Laughton Pelham & Grace Holles, married Catharine Manners on 31 October 1726 in Saint James, Westminster, London, England.[5]
Henry and Katharine had two sons and six daughters, both sons and two daughters died in infancy.[1]
Henry was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1743 until his death in 1754, his elder brother Thomas succeeded him as Prime Minister.[1] During his term as Prime Minister, the British calendar was reorganised with New Year’s Day moving from March to 1 January, in 1751.[1]
Henry Pelham died on 6 March 1754,[4] at Arlington St, London.[1]
Lady Catherine survived her husband and in 1755 applied for a lease of a building between Whitehall Court and the Privy Garden. She presented plans for renovation of the area which are shown in source.[4]
Lady Catherine died at her residence at Whitehall on 17 Feb. 1780. She left a will that her house at Whitehall should be sold and the proceeds divided between her two unmarried daughters, Frances and Mary.[4] On the death of Frances Pelham, the house was sold by auction on 22nd March 1804 to Richard Tait, who on 17th November of the same year disposed of it to the Hon. George Cavendish.[4]
