Biography

Elizabeth Petre was born in Essex. She was the daughter of Sir William Petre and Gertrude Tyrrell .[1] [2]

Marriages & Children

Between 1558-1561, 1st marriage, Willington, Bedfordshire, England

John Gostwick, Esq. marries Elizabeth Petre, daughter of Sir William Petre and Gertrude Tyrrell.

Prior to their marriage, Elizabeth held Willington, John had been in Cambridge at School the years she ruled court.

abt 1582, 2nd marriage, England

Edward Radcliffe to widow Elizabeth (Petre) Gostwick, daughter of Sir William Petre and Gertrude Tyrrell, relict of John Gostwick, Esq.

23-Oct-1556, Willington Court Roll, Willington, Bedfordshire, England[3]

Willington, view of frankpledge and court roll. Manor of Elizabeth Petre, daughter of Sir William Petre [of Ingatestone]
View of Frankpledge with Court of Elizabeth petre, first daughter of William petre, Knight, held there the 23rd day of October in the third and fourth year of the reigns of Philip and Mary, by the grace of God King and Queen of England, Spain, France, also Sicily, Jerusalem and Ireland, defenders of the faith, Archdukes of Austria, Dukes of Burgundy, Medina, Brabant, Count of Hapsburg, Flanders and the Tyrol, and Ireland (1556)

25-Oct-1557, Willington Court Roll, Willington, Bedfordshire, England[4]

2nd and last year where Elizabeth is Lady of the Manor of Willington.

note: this provides evidence of two dates:

  • that her marriage to John Gostwick was after Oct-1557 (but before 1561)
  • that her birth date was more like 1535, age 21, Lady of Willington Court, unmarried.

1582, Widowed, Willington, Bedfordshire, England

Husband John Gostwick died.

Research Notes

re: Parentage: John Gostwick was son of Edmund Gostwick and Anne Hardin was removed as incorrect. The correct parentage is already presently linked to John Gostwick's profile.

Death at age 112 looks dubious. corrected. She died abt 1593, we know because Edward Radcliffe remarries in May 1594 to his 3rd wife as widow

Re: Death Location I have no evidence one way or the other, but put her at Goldington, Bedfordshire, England when she died; her home in Beds., where she married, where her relic remarried.

Petre-49 and Petre-44 appear to represent the same person because: Sorting out the wrong parents for her Gostwick husband has unearthed duplicate entries for her.

I have detached William born 1888 as her father and I'll creeate a new father for her.

There appears to be an error in the birth or death date causing an error 104 (age too old). Recommend checking/adjusting and sourcing.
