This profile is not to be confused with another Alice, last name unknown who was married to another John Shaw, b. 1600 London (appears this came from LDS?) d. 24 Oct 1694 Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Alice Phillips was born about 1637, probably in Dedham, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1] She is the daughter of Deacon Nicholas Phillips and Elizabeth Jewson.[2]
Alice lived a few years in Dedham before moving to Weymouth around 1640. They lived next door to her uncle Martin in the "Old Spain" area. John King and Joseph Shaw were neighbors living in the same area.[3] Her family and uncles were involved in pioneer farming and town building and she grew up doing the same.
Alice married John Shaw around 1650 probably in Weymouth.[4] They had eleven children.
Her father died before October 3, 1672, when his will was proved in Weymouth. Alice inherited £10 plus a one-sixth share of her father's residual estate after specific bequeaths.[5]
Alice and John's youngest child, Ebenezer was born April 24, 1674 so Alice was still alive at that time and could not have died in 1672 as previously stated. There is some suggestion that she may have outlived her husband, John Shaw, who died September 16, 1704 at Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts. [6]
In fact, Alice died after 17 October 1704 when she was made an Administrator of her husband's estate: "Administration on the estate of John Shaw, late of Weymouth, husbandman, is granted to his widow Alice and his eldest son John Shaw, 17th October 1704. (Suffolk Probate, 15: 350.) Division of his estate mentions his eldest son John, his second son Nicholas, his third son Joseph, his fourth son Benjamin, his youngest son Ebenezer and his daughters, Mary King, widow, her four sons and daughter ____ King, Joseph Poole and his wife Elizabeth, Gideon Tirrell and his wife Hannah, Richard Davenport and his wife Abigail, and John Androse and his wife Alice, 11th March 1705-06."
