Biography

William FitzEmpress (22 Jul 1136 Argentan, Normandy -1164 30 Jan 1163/4 Rouen).

bur: Notre Dame, Rouen[citation needed]

  • Count of Poitou, Viscount of Dieppe

Research Notes

Cecily FitzJohn, sometimes Talbot, Countess of Hereford, married secondly, William de Poitou. This was sometime after 1155, when her first husband, Roger, Earl of Hereford died.[1]

That William de Poitou has not been traced, but the name does not necessarily indicate he was from the ruling family of Poitou, it may just be an indication that he or his family was from Poitou.

Although he was living in the right time period this can't be William FitzEmpress, Count of Poitou, the brother of Henry II of England, who died in 1164, as Cecily FitzJohn was married to her third husband Walter de Mayenne (Meduana) about 1162. William FitzEmpress was also negotiating to marry Isabel de Warenne in the early 1160s.[2]

It appears William never married. The love of his life Isabel Warenne was denied him by Archbishop Thomas Becket, due to her deceased husband having relatives in common (grandparents and grandfathers as siblings) with William. It is said William died of a broken heart. His brother King Henry blamed Thomas for his brother's death, and that may have been the catalyst for Thomas Becket's murder.

As far as I know, there is no evidence William married Constance of Penthievre.

Please disconnect Cecily FitzJohn as wife. Thank you.
