This George Potter is often incorrectly connected as a father to Potters who appear in Rhode Island during the Puritan Great Migration of 1621-40, specifically Nathaniel Potter, Robert Potter, and George Potter. Because of that, "Puritan Great Migration Adjunct" is being applied to this profile so that it can be monitored to avoid re-creation or attempted re-attachment to legitimate PGM profiles.

Disputed Relations

This profile most likely came into existence, and further morphed, because someone was trying to link an early Potter Immigrant to America back to England (it looks like it was originally a Robert Potter who was the immigrant, but whose profile eventually became the profile for a Nathaniel Potter).

When and why researchers and descendants of the Potters of Rhode Island decided that they came from a George Potter of London is unclear. From 1600 to 1630, there were hundreds of Potter children born to fathers whose first name was George, and tens of thousands of children born whose last name was Potter.

There were at least three George Potters living in London during the early 1600s, as three of them died there from 1627-1630 and there appears to have been multiple women married to a George Potter from 1604-1628 in London. The following profile most likely contains more than one George Potter combined into one and they need to be sorted out. As to whether any of the George Potters were migrants to America, or was the father of a migrant, that is speculative at this point.

There is a reason why there are so many confused and different trees concerning the origins of the Potters in New England. There are a great number of Potter immigrants to New England and an even greater number of Potters in England at that time. With a few exceptions there are no known relationships between the immigrants and their English forbears. See Space: New England Immigrants with Surname Potter

Without evidence it is speculated by some, such as Janice Potter Dorchester in her George Potter of Aquidneck, Rhode Island and Some of his Descendants[1] that George Potter, father of several American immigrants, was born about 1584 in London and that his parents were Robert Potter and Elizabeth Marshall Potter. It is claimed in the same source, again without citations, that George and his family traveled to America with those who were followers of Anne Hutchinson.

According to Perry Streeter[2] "The English origins of the George Potter and his kinship, if any, to the other Potter immigrants of Rhode Island remain unknown."

Biography

Birth

His exact birth date and place are unknown since it is unknown which George Potter tis profile actually represents. This rofile currently estimates that George was married about 1607 and born about 1584 (23 years earlier).

Immigration

There are no records indicating George ever left England.

Death

There are multiple George Potters who died in England at the time this George would most likely have died. See Research Notes below.

Marriage

There are multiple records indicating that men named George Potter in the London area in the early 1600s. The following are women living in the London area from 1604 to 1628 whose husband was named George Potter. It is highly unlinkely that each woman married the same George Potter.

  • Elizabeth Straunge, widow of George Straunge, in London had a marriage license 6 Dec 1604 to marry George Potter, sadler of St. Sepulchre, London.[3]
  • Elizabeth Ratclyff married George Potter 18 May 1606 St Giles without Cripplegate, London, England.[4]
  • Unknown (Unknown) Potter, wife of George Potter, died 17 Nov 1607, St Bride, Fleet Street.[5]
  • Elizabeth Croachman, 14 May 1609, Saint Giles Cripplegate, London.[6] (not a complete index and may be based on IGI, therefore the reliability of this information is very low)
  • Ann, wife of George Potter, was buried at St. James, Clerkenwell, 20 Nov 1613.[7]
  • Elizabeth Tayler, St James, Clerkenwell, 3 Feb 1613/4.[8]
  • Joane Barnes married Georg Potter 9 May 1613, London Saint Botolph's Aldgate[9];Joane, wife of George and mother of Anne Potter, bapt. 23 Jun 1620[10] and James Potter who was baptized 7 Apr 1622, Saint Botolph without Aldgate, London, England, United Kingdom.[11]
  • Martha Unknown, named in the will of George Potter, the sadler, January 1628/9 at St. Bride, Fleet Street, London[12]

Potter Children of London Whose Father Was Named George

The following lists many children whose father was named George Potter and were born from 1605 to 1622. Based on the various locations of the baptismal records, it is likely they are from different George Potters. The list is most likely not comprehensive and should be sorted out among possible George Potters.

Clerkenwell

  • Robert Potter, baptized 17 Jan 1607/8 at St. James, Clerkenwell, Islington, London.[13][14][15] This Robert died a couple of years later and was buried 25 Aug 1609 at St James, Clerkenwell.[16] Many trees claim he was Robert Potter the immigrant to Rhode Island but since this Robert died as an infant, it is not the correct Robert.
  • Stillborn child of George Potter, 23 Aug 1612, Saint James, Clerkenwell, London, England.[17]

Child of George Baptized at Cripplegate

  • Eliza. [Elizabeth] Potter, baptized 27 Nov 1609 at St. Giles Cripplegate.[18] Claimed to have married innkeeper William Baulston, whose wife died April 15, 1683. Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. No legitimate source has been found to support this.

Child of George Baptized at Stepney

  • George Potter, baptized 26 Oct 1617, St. Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, London, England.[19] How do we know this isn't the George we're looking for.

Children of George Baptized at St Boltoph's Aldgate

  • Anne Potter, dau of Georg and Joane, baptized 23 Jun 1620, Saint Botolph without Aldgate, London, England.[20]
  • James Potter, son of Georg and Joane, baptized 7 Apr 1622, Saint Botolph without Aldgate, London, England.[21]

Children of George Baptized at Fleet Street

  • Daniel Potter, baptized 2 Mar 1605/6 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[22] Daniel is not generally on the lists of children of George and Martha. It seems entirely possible that Daniel is a son.
  • Marye Potter, baptized 17 Jun 1610 at St. Bride, Fleet Street, London, England St Bride, Fleet St, City of London. [23][24]
  • Martha Potter, baptized 18 Oct 1611 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[25] Supposed wife of Thomas Hazard (1609-1679), and she purportedly died in Portsmouth, Rhode Island circa 1669, but there is no proof this is that Martha Potter.
  • John Potter, baptized 17 Oct 1613 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[26]
  • Rebeckah Potter, baptized 29 Oct 1615 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[27]
  • Will. Potterr [William Potter], baptized 2 Mar 1616 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[28]
  • George Potter, baptized 9 Dec 1618 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[29]
  • John Potter, baptized 26 Dec 1620 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[30] Claimed, without evidence, that he immigrated to America and died in Rhode Island in 1647.
  • Nathaniel Potter, son of George and Martha Potter, baptized 7 Apr 1622 at St. Bride, Fleet Street.[31] This is not the immigrant to America who was an inhabitant of Aquidneck (the island of Rhode Island) in 1638, and on 30 April 1639 one of the twenty-nine signers of the Compact reincorporating Portsmouth or the man who married Dorothy Wilbore and died in Rhode Island about 1644 as that Nathaniel would have had to have been born before 1618 to have been showing up in records in 1638/9.
  • Hannah Potter, dau of George Potter, died 7 Apr 1622, London St Bride's Church Fleet Street, Middlesex, England.[32]

Research Notes

George Potter, Brewer, of St Botolph without Bishopsgate

A George Potter married a Joane, and baptized at least Anne and James, at St Botolph without Aldgate. About 500 meters away is St Botolph without Bishopsgate, and there were at least three records of a George Potter there. This would indicate that this George is distinct from the George Potter, Sadler, and George Potter, Stationer, but is may be the George Potter, poor man. The three records in Bishopsgate are here:

  • 16 Aug 1614: "Robert Willey of Halliwell Street, tailor, to give evidence against Elizabeth Hudson, John Baker of Shoreditch, chandler, and Sarah, wife of Gabriel Smith of the same, yeoman; and of Thomas Collyns of Goswell Street, tailor, and the said John Baker for the said Sarah to appear; and of Roland Nicholls of St. Botolph's, Bishopsgate, baker, and George Potter of the same, brewer, for the said John Baker to appear. The said Elizabeth delivered by proclamation. Sess. Roll 533/70, 88, 88a. G.D.R. 2/25d, 27d, 28."[33]
  • 3 and 5 Dec 1614: "John Baker of Shoreditch, chandler, handed in bail to John Grace and George Potter of the same, yeomen, to keep the peace towards William Williams [Guilliams] of Aldgate, yeoman; John Northopp [Norcoppe], servant to William Spatchurste of St. Botolph's, Bishopsgate, chandler, handed in bail to the said William and Christopher Lovelace of Norton Folgate, yeoman, for the like; John Ferne [Farne] of Shoreditch, victualler, handed in bail to the said John Grace and Uriah Lacey of the same, tailor, for the like; Richard Thompson of the same, baker, handed in bail to the said Lacey and Nathaniel Griffen of the same, for the like; Charles Mason of the same, silkweaver, handed over in bail to John Hole, bricklayer, and Geoffrey Stacey, both of the same, for the like; Robert Haley of the same, blacksmith, for the like. All, together with Henry Leaver and Francis Glover of the same, yeomen, indicted for a riot and pledged for fines in June and August, A.D. 1615 (and pp.135, 164 and P.R.B. 1/49)."[34]
  • 14 and 15 Jan 1617/8: "Richard Langford of Rosemary Lane and George Potter of the same, brewer, for Henry Bastard of the same, blacksmith, to be of good behaviour; and of Richard Wennam, merchant-tailor, Francis Bastard, blacksmith, and Walter Jones, tailor, all of the same, for Alice, wife of the said Henry, to answer Thomas Reighnoldes and keep the peace. Sess. Roll 562/59–61. Sess. Reg. 2/476."[35]

George Potter, sadler, died 1628, Fleet Street, London

A George Potter, Innkeeper and Sadler, whose wife was named Martha, was buried 4 Feb 1628 at St. Bride Fleet Street, London[36] In the will for this George (written 28 Jan 1628 and probated 9 Feb 1628) he names his wife as "Martha" (others who are better at reading the penmanship can probably extract more family members, but one of the executors is Benjamin Potter and two other Potters mentioned are George and Samuell/Daniell).[37] This is probably the same George Potter, sadler, who was asked to appraise the estate of T. John Freeman by John, himself, in his will dated 21 July 1620.[38]

George Potter, sadler, married Elzabeth Straunge, 1604

A George Potter, sadler of St. Sepulchre, London, had a marriage license 6 Dec 1604 to marry an Elizabeth Straunge, widow of George Straunge, in London.[39] This source also lists Benjamin Potter as a sadler at St. Sepulchre who married Elizabeth Tuttle 23 Jan 1625/6 and is possibly George's brother or son.

Was this the same George as the sadler who died in 1628 and whose wife was Martha?

George Potter, died 1630 "a poor man", Clerkenwell, London

George Potter, "a poor man," died 19 May 1630 at St. James, Clerkenwell, London.[40]

George Potter, stationer, died 1627, London

George Potter, stationer, wrote a will 12 Jul 1625, which was probated 17 Apr 1627.[41] This George did not seem to have children, or if he did, they either died before the will was written or he left them out of the will. Within the will he bequeaths his wife's gown (so she must have died previous to 1625) to "my Sister Weedham" and to her daughter Dorothy (not yet age 21) he bequethed money. "Sister" in this case could be biological sister or sister-in-law. Dorothy also was bequeathed "my wives patterns for bone lace." He had a brother Francis who has a son Walter and more than one daughter. He had a brother Thomas, and a brother Richard who had a daughter. He had a sister, Margaret Farmer. A niece Mary Cade.

  • The Family Group Sheet - George and Martha Potter Family Narrative at Our History Told contains information trying to show that a George and Martha Potter were the parents of many of the children born in London during 1604-1622 and George was the same as the Brewer and "poor man." However, based on the information in the profile, that is most likely inaccurate.

Beryl, this profile seems a bit of a conglomeration of several George Potters. I am adding source info where I can hoping that someone will take the time to more accurately connect-the-dots based on birth, death, and marriage locations. I have added info from two George Potters' wills which might help weed out the incorrect George. George Potter the sadler left a pretty good trail to follow, so that might be a place to start.

I looked for a marriage of George Potter c 1607 in this same church but only see a John Potter married Elizabeth Gage 18 May 1608

Legitimate children of George and Martha are listed here. The problem is that there is no evidence to support that they were the same persons as the immigrants. They need to be wiggled apart. Probably removing the children who have other attachments from these parents and then creating new profiles for George and Martha's children.

First specifically, George of Portsmouth, Potter-410, needs to be disconnected. He has no known parents or origins, or other relations among the other Potter immigrants.

Objections to disconnecting?

Doubtful George Potter is the son of Robert Potter and Elizabeth Marshall. He was born about 1584; Robert and Elizabeth married in 1591. Source for Robert and Elizabeth: Potter, Frank Elwood, comp. Descendants of Nicholas Potter of Lynn, Massachusetts: Supplement to Part 9, entitled "Nicholas Potter of Lynn, Massachusetts and Descendants," From Charles Edward Potter's POTTER GENEALOGIES (1888). There were numerous immigrants to colonial Rhode Island named Potter and there may (or may not) have been ties of kinship between some of them. Once upon a time, several Potter immigrants were erroneously identified as children of George and Martha ([-?-]) Potter of London in the research of Vernon and Nola (Steed) Valantine of La Crescenta, California, as submitted to the Ancestral File of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In 1999, another researcher, Paul Gifford, reviewed the relevant parish registers and discovered that most of the birth records thought to pertain to the immigrant Potter siblings actually had corresponding death records! The origins of the Potter immigrants and their kinship, if any, remain unknown.

Note that S2 has his wife as :Martha Lome, with the same DOB and DOD as Martha Weeden.

I added source S2 and grouped the various notes under one heading. I did not change any of the text, though some simplification is possible.

George is a MRCA to two profiles, which serves as a check on the lineage. I may add a DNA section when I have the links all completed.
