Biography

Asel Poulson was born about 1735 in Maryland.

Asel married Elizabeth Towne (1767 - 1855) in 1783 in Maryland. [1]Their children were:

  1. Isaac Poulson (1784 - 1854)
  2. Margaret Poulson (1790 - )
  3. Beal Poulson (1795 - 1870)
  4. Effa Poulson (1797 - )
  5. Elizabeth Poulson (1803 - 1880)
  6. William Martin Poulson (1805 - 1887)
  7. Infant Poulson (1806 - )
  8. Providence Poulson (1810 - )
  9. Asel Polson (1813 - 1895)
  10. John Poulson (1815 - )
  11. Greenberry Poulson (1816 - 1901)
  12. Mary Ann Poulson (1817 - 1858)
  13. Martin Poulson (1820 - )
  14. Rebecca Poulson (~1822 - )
  15. Catherine Poulson (~1824 - ).

Birth

Asel Poulson was born 1756-1774 according to the 1800 US census, before 1740 according to the 1840 census.[2] and about 1735 in Maryland, according to the 1850 US census.[3] It is not clear what his actual year of birth was; 1750-1760 seems more likely based on 1800 census and birth dates of children.

His parents are not known. He was classed in various census as white,[4] colored,[5] and half-breed.[3] Some online family trees suggest he was Cherokee heritage. (There are Cherokee Polsons on the Dawes Roll)

Marriage

He married Elizabeth [last name unknown].[3] (Some online family trees list her as Elizabeth Towne, but no basis for this last name is given.) The date of marriage was before 1784 based on age of children in the 1800 census.

1800 US Census

In the 1800 US census, Asel Polson was living in Harford, Maryland. His household included one white male under 10, one white male 10-15, one white male 26-44 (himself, so born 1756-1774), one white female under 10, one white female 16-25, one white female 26-44 and one slave.[4]

1840 Census

By 1840, Asel and family had moved to Virginia. He is listed in the 1840 census living in Marshall, Virginia. However the census identifies his household as free colored persons - three males 10-23, one male 100 and over, two females 10-23, and one female 36-54.[5] [6]

1850 US Census

Asel (listed as white) and Elizabeth appeared on census of 19 Oct 1850 at Marshall County, Virginia. In the 1850 census Asel (age 115), Farmer, was in District 33, Marshall, Virginia, United States.[3]

The census taker wrote the following very unusual note:

"This family can all read though none but the father (Asel) can write. Asel Poulson is the oldest resident in the county. He is called a half-breed Indian but my impression is that he is full breed. He is very frail now, but at 100 years old, could do a full days work..."[3]

Death

Asel died about 18 Nov 1851 in Moundsville, Marshall, Virginia, United States aged ~116. He is listed in various online family trees as died on 18 Nov 1851 in Moundsville, Marshall, West Virginia, United States. No record for this is known. However this is plausible based on his age and his last known appearance in the 1850 census.
