Biography

"Cleopatra" was probably born about 1599-1602 in Tsenacommacah, the home of paramount chief Powhatan, in what is now southeastern Virginia.[1] Based on a 1641 petition from Thomas Rolfe to the General Court (the governing body) in Virginia (from a later copy made before 1691, original now lost) seeking permission to visit his mother's sister, Cleopatra, [2] this would make her daughter of either Wahunsenacawh Powhatan or of one of his many wives. [3]

A previous version of this profile claimed she was daughter of Wahunsenacawh through his favorite wife, Winganuske, but "Cleopatra" was already an adult when Winganuske became a wife of Powhatan. The chief had a practice of returning a wife to her family once she had born him a child. The name of Cleopatra's mother is not known.

No one knows what her actual name was, Cleopatra is either a name given to her by the English or the copyist's attempt to read the original handwriting and getting it wrong. Helen Rountree and others suggest she may have been the same woman as Mattachanna, a known aunt of Pocahontas who may have accompanied her to London.[4]

In 2009, Don Greene introduced the claim that Cleopatra m. Opechancanough who was her father's adopted brother and therefore her adopted uncle.[5]

There is no documented marriage, no documented name of a husband. There are no documented children. There is no documentation that would indicate who either of her parents was. Her date and place of death are unknown.

Therefore she has been detached from Opechancanough Powhatan.
She has also been detached as spouse of Nectowance Powhatan
And she has been detached as mother of Nicketti.

The "genealogy" of Pocahontas's sister will always be in dispute as the direct, first-hand sources for her and the family are non-existent. Most of the sources are repetitions of the one known 1641 petition described above.

A History of Colonial Virginia by William Cridlen, available on Ancestrydotcom on mentions Cleopatra once, does not say who she is married to or any children. She is only spoken of in reference to her nephew Thomas Rolfe.

History and Present State of Virginia by Robert Beverely, available online various sites, does not mention Cleopatra at all, page 50-51 references Opechancanough only. no wife or children are mentioned.

There is exactly one record that names “Cleopatra” a copy of a request from Thomas Rolfe to visit her. She appears in no other record or document. Her parents, spouse(s) and/or children are unknown. Rolfe said she was his mother’s sister, but whether through Powhatan or one of his wives is unknown.

Chief Powhatan was called “Emperor” by White men, and he declared himself equal to the English King, therefore stated “I am a King too”. This is likely where the titles “King & Princess” originated.

The only mention of “Cleopatra” anywhere is a much later record of a petition from Thomas Rolfe. The original document does not exist so there is no way to know if “Cleopatra” was even the woman’s name. There is no other information where she was born or died, only that she was apparently alive in 1641.

There is no evidence that Cleopatra went to England. It is believed that one of the women whoaccompanied Pocahontas was another aunt, Mattachanna. Six women went onthe trip, only three returned to America.

Powhatan-282 and Powhatan-5 appear to represent the same person because: Seeking to merge away intentionally created duplicate of Cleopatra. Thank you

The spouse and child should be detached so that this can be merged with the original profile (Powhatan-5). Let me know if you need assistance with this!

Cleopatra claimants matching on these chromosomes and segments 2 218; 6 43; 10 46; 17 54 hold kit numbers A901886, T462490, M319398, A0445309 and also match on the X chromosome or the 23. This means they hold 4 common ancestors in common and their cM are in the 10th generation level with these SNPs being the 4 ancestors and the 2nd chromosome at 218 segment is in the Artic Powhatan Circle with "Paintings" software.
