  2. Delete connection to current children shown on WikiTree, neither of whom are documented.

Note

Turton does not have this generation. However it does fit with Ancestral Roots' statement that Emma de Provence was great granddaughter of Boso II, d. 965/7. Todd A Farmerie, who commented on this line, states that the existence of Rotbaud & his wife Emildis de Gevaudan is a theory of Vajay. Todd doesn't hold with the theory, preferring the more traditional solution, which matches Turton.

Name

Rotbold II, Comte de Provence. [1]
Rotbold II, Count of Provence. [2]
Rotbold II of Arles[3]

Parentage and Siblings

Rotbald II was the son of Boso [1]

His brother Guillaume (William) was born about 955. A 963 charter names Guillaume first, while a 965 charter names Rotbald first. Thus, while there is doubt about birth order, both were born about 955.[1]

Count of Provence

"Comte de Provence, charters showing that both he and his brother Guillaume were recorded as counts during the same period, although it is not known whether this was a joint countship or whether there was a geographical split between their jurisdictions. [1]

Rotbold II (also Rothbold, Rotbald, Rodbald, Roubaud, or Rotbaud) (died 1014 or 1015) was the Count and Margrave of Provence from 1008 to his death. [2]

970 Donation

By charter dated April 970, Count Rotbald ("Rotbaldus comes") consented to the donation by his brother Guillaume ("Wilelmus comes Provincie et coniunx mea Arsinna") to Saint-Victor de Marseille. [1]

975/80 Marriage

Rotbald II married first, before 975/80, Ermengarde, parents unknown. In a charter dated 22 April 1015, their daughter ""Ema comitissa filia Rotboldi comitis et Hermengardæ uxoris eius, matris meæ" donated property " to the priory of Courrenz in Provence.[1]

Rotbald married Ermengard. [4]

Rotbald II married secondly, Emilde (Eimildis), also parents unknown. A charter dated 993/1002 signed by "Rotbaldus comes et uxor sua Eimildis, Adalax comitissa et filius suus Willelmus…" confirms this marriage.[1]

Rotbold II of Provence married Emilde of Gévaudan daughter of Stephen, Viscount of Gévaudan. [2]

Some scholars believe that "Emilde" and "Ermengarde" refer to the same person. Cawley presents a detailed discussion of the pros and cons of this possibility at his site, while not reaching a conclusion.[1]

990 Donation

By charter dated 28 August 990, "Willelmus comes" donated property to Cluny. The donation was signed by "Rodbaldus comes, Adalaix comitissa, Wilelmus comes et filius eius Wilelmus."[1]

992 Donation

By charter dated 1992, subscribed by "Dominus Rotbaldus comes" (Lord Rotbaldus, Count), William/Willelmus/Guillaume with his consort Adelaix restored property to the abbey of Saint-Césaire d´Arles.[1]

1014 Death

He died 1014 or 1015[2]

1016 Remariage of Widow

His widow Ermengard married Rudolf III of Burgundy c. 1016 and she died c. 28 Aug. 1057. [4]

Issue

  1. Emma, b. [975/80, daughter of Rotbald II and his first wife, d. after 1063. She m. 992 or before as his second wife, Gu9illaume III "Taillefer", Comte de Toulouse, son of Raymond Pons, Comte de Toulouse & his [second] wife Adelais d'Anjou ([970/75]-Sep 1037, bur Toulouse, Saint-Sernin). [1]
  2. Guillame (V), born to Rotbald II and his first/second wife, died after 1037.[1] William V (or III) of Provence [4]
  3. Emilde, born to Rotbald II and his first/second wife. Nun. (She is named in Europäische Stammtafeln[210] as the daughter of Rotbald [II] but the primary source on which this is based has not yet been identified.) [1] Emma, who married William III Taillefer, Count of Toulouse, [4] and thus brought the margravial title in Provence to the House of Rouergue. [5]
  4. Tetberga or Geriberga, born to Rotbald II and his first/second wife, died after 1010. m (before 11 Jun 1001) Armengol "él de Córdoba" Comte de Urgell, son of Borell [II] Comte de Barcelona & his first wife Ledgarda [de Toulouse], born 975 and died Córdoba 1 Sep 1010). [1]
  5. Hugues, born to Rotbald II and his [third] wife Ermengard, died after 1019.[1]
  6. Guillaume, supposedly born to Rotbald II and his [third] wife Ermengard. Cawley observes that "it seems unlikely that he was the same person as Guillaume [V] Comte de Provence who, as a middle-aged adult, would not have needed to be "commended" to the emperor by his wife in 1016. In any case, it seems unlikely that Rotbald would have given the name Guillaume to the second of the sons when his older half-brother, the future Guillaume [V] Comte de Provence, was still alive as shown above.][1]

In addition to these children, the following are presently attached in WikiTree:

  1. Gerberg Maine Anjou Not documented in RMG. [1]
  2. Rotbold III Not documented in RMG. Referring to Rotbold III, Cawley states that "no primary source has been found which confirms that this Rotbald [III] ever existed."[1]

I suggest disconnecting Ava and the children as a first step. Almodis is uncertain but since she is documented by Cawley we might keep her, at least for now?
I took on updating this profile with data from Cawley's work in FMG. Documenation in the narrative is nearing completion, and the data field will need to be revised for consistency with the data. This will mean de-linking the two current children, who are not children of Rotbold II, as well as one or both current wives, who are not Ermengarde. Please let me know if you have a problem with my going ahead and doing this. Thanks.
