Born in secret on 29 March 1592, Damerei Ralegh was the first born son of Sir Walter Raleigh and his wife, Bess Throckmorton. His parents had kept their hasty marriage from Queen Elizabeth I who would never have approved. According to Adrian Gilbert, Sir Walter Raleigh's half brother, he had been present at Mile End when Lady Raleigh 'was first delivered with child'; her husband being away in the West Country putting together one of his expeditions.[1] The Earl of Essex stood godfather at his baptism.
Damerei was sent to nurse with a Throckmorton relative at Enfield, and on the 27 April Bess was back at court in the service of the Queen. [2] It wasn't until the 28th of May that Damerei was introduced to his father, for probably the first and only time. Shortly thereafter the secret was out and both parents were taken into custody and clapped in the Tower on the 7th of August. Damerei did not survive, dying either late in 1592 or early in 1593. [3]
