Alfred was the first Bishop of the (Episcopal) Diocese of Southern Virginia.
He graduated from the College of William and Mary in and completed studies for the ministry at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. When war broke out he was forced to evacuate his rectory in Fredericksburg, VA, whereupon he served as a post chaplain in the Confederate States Army and remained a member of a camp of confederate veterans his entire life; many surviving members attended his funeral.
He served at Christ Church in Alexandria and at Immanuel Church in Baltimore following the war.
Alfred was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in the City of Richmond, VA.[1]
