Biography

  • [1] John was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1784 in Virginia to James Reynolds and Susannah Malone. He was a twin to his sister, Rebecca. His father, James had come from Richmond County, Virginia. John married Mary A. Leftridge (Leftwich) on March 5, 1811 in Bairdstown, Greene County, Georgia. Mary was the daughter of John Leftwich who fought with the Virginia troops in the Revolutionary War. The Leftwich family is traced to Lord Richard de Vernon, who accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066, and was awarded the English estate of Leftwich. They had eleven children. John died in Greene County, Georgia in September 1846. His will was probated with the state of Georgia, Greene County on September 22, 1846. It states, "It is my desire that my plantation, livestock and crops be held in trust by my executors until my youngest child becomes of age. My negro man, Dick, to be held in trust and remain on the plantation to work for my minor children. When my children arrive at age of manhood, all my property to be sold and distributed equally among my children: William Reynolds, James Reynolds, Julia Ann Brooks, John Reynolds, Rebecca Boon, Littleberry Reynolds, Austin Reynolds, Lytha Raynolds, Doctor Reynolds and Nancy Reynolds. Appoint best friend and kinsman Samuel D. Durham executor." Wit.: James Reynolds, James Durham, and James Brooks. Recorded 13 October, 1846. Mary, his wife, died before John in 1842, so is not mentioned in his will. His youngest son, Doc Leondus would have been eleven years old at the time of his father's death and is referred to as Doctor Reynolds. Son, Samuel Davis Reynolds, born December 24, 1831 is not mentioned in the will.
