James Alfred Richey was born on September 9, 1824 in South Carolina, United States, son of William J. Richey (1800–1853) and Mary Ann Seawright (1803–1864).

James (19) married Elizabeth Martin (22) (born on January 15, 1822 in Anderson, South Carolina; daughter of Jacob Sanford Martin and Catherine Martin) on August 22, 1844 in , Anderson, South Carolina, USA. Their children were:

James died on December 3, 1899 in Banks, Georgia, United States, aged 75. He was buried in Webbs Creek Cemetery, Homer, Banks County, Georgia.[1]
