Mary was likely born in New Brunswick or Lower Canada. Her parents were Empire Loyalists. Her father died the year after they reached York (Toronto) when Mary was only 10. Her mother eventually remarried and moved just north of York to New Market. Mary and her siblings became well established in York and became prominent members of the Family Compact, the ruling elite of the time.
The marriage license for the marriage of Mary to Stephen Heward was issued the same day as the license for the marriage of her step sister Sophia Beman to Ely Player. Both couples were married the next day.
