There May be a connection to the following people.

  1. John Rogers who died March 15, 1714 in York Co., Va. and was married to Agnes Adustan who was born around 1640 in York Co., Va.
  2. They had a son named Thomas Rogers who was born Bet. 1670 and 1673. He Married Grizzell Clements of Abington Parish, Glouchester Co., Va.
  3. They had a son named Clayton Rogers who could be a father or uncle to Adenstone who you have mentioned as a possible father to doswell. This would certainly make the connection between Rogers, Doswell, Adustan families.

--- John Aduston is the man who began the Aduston entailment. There is a very good article in the 1989 NGS Quarterly, Vol. 77, #2, June, 1989,. which explains in full how it happened. However, the possible connection did not happen as you have described in steps #2 and #3. I am going to skip all of the generations in between John Aduston and where I think that my Doswell may have been created. You can read them for yourself in the NGS Quarterly. My brief lineage (which is still in question) possibly begins on page 97 +4 iii.

Many years after John Aduston died an Adduston Rogers married a Catherine Doswell. They have 3 children which are named in the York Co. VA Parish records. One chld is found in a grandmother's Will. The rest I am trying to document as being possible children--Doswell Rogers b. 1736 and Thomas Rogers ca 1740. (I suspect to be a brother, but NOT proven.)

I am looking for descendants of Adduston Rogers and Catherine Doswell of York Co.VA to Goochland Co. VA where Adduston died ca 1747. I have not found provisions for his family which may or may not exist because he died intestate. There is a very small inventory which reveals very little data.

At present I have found about 25 or 30 Adustones Rogers who are WEST of the Blue Ridge and are not from those of the Tidewater area with the possible excetpion of one. I am trying to keep a profile on each of them Possibly I have found a grandson of Catherine in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Rogers, Doswell

Last name is usually spelled Rogers. Information supplied by Eleanor Edmondson and the 1989 NGSQ article (Vol. 77, June 1989, No. 2. by Margaret Emery)

Born 1736 Virginia, parents are Adduston Rogers (b. York Co., VA, d. abt 1748 Goochland Co., VA) and Catherine Doswell (see 1989 NGSQ article which details the entailment of John Adduston in the 1660s).

1771 - In William Herbert's Company, Botetourt Co., VA

1774: In Herbert's Company. Doswell was among those diverted to Capt. Looney's company on the Clinch and did not fight at Point Pleasant. Instead he was with Capt Looney, Lieut. Daniel Boone and Lieut. John Cox guarding the Clinch frontier.

1777: In Capt. John Cox's Company, Montgomery Co., VA militia

1782, 1786 records place him in Montgomery Co., VA

1791 - Lives along the Clinch in the lower tax district of Russell Co., VA (later Lee County) among some well known Tory families (i.e. Capt. James Roberts and the William Ingraham who married William Riddle's widow)

1792 Ann signs away dower rights in Wythe Co., VA. Doswell Rogers' wife Anne is likely a second wife. The evidence for this is that she appears on two Wythe Co. VA deeds in 1792 as they prepare to move to Russell Co. VA. However, there was likely an earlier marriage given the range of ages of their children.

Died Between 1812 and 1819 in Lee Co. (now Scott Co.), VA. All his land is now in Scott County (formed from Lee County in 1814.)

Children (per Eleanor Edmondson): "

1. Elisha was born 4 Dec 1787 in Mont. Co. VA. He moved from Lee Co. VA to Bledsoe Co. TN to Lee Co. VA to Hamilton Co. TN. He is well-known in the Chattanooga area as a large land owner of Walden's Ridge. He has a son named Dauswell for whom Daus, TN was named, He married Sarah Thurman and died in Hamilton Co. TN in 1858. Elisha is named in Hurd's journal as Doswell's son.

2. Joseph m. Susannah (unknown). He moved from Lee Co. VA to Bledsoe Co. TN with his bro, Elisha. He moved back to Lee Co. VA with him. Joseph died shortly thereafter leaving 4 children. The Rogers are not Cherokees, but many of the branches have tried to apply and this family was rejected. Joseph's issue were taken to McMinn Co. TN when Susan remarried to James Walling. The boys later moved down to Hamilton Co. near their uncle, Elisha. Then many of the descendants went to MO. Joseph is mentioned in Hurd's journal as Doswell's son.

3. William was born 14 Oct 1763 in Halifax Co. VA. He married Rosannah Heard (m. by Joseph Anthony of Henry Co., VA in Montgomery Co., VA). He lived in Mont. Co., Lee Co. VA, Hawkins Co., TN, and lastly moved to White Co. TN. He is well-documented in White Co. and is not a Cherokee with many slaves and large plantations as one rumor on the internet says. He married second Mrs.Susannah (Walling) Heard William is mentioned in Hurd's journal as Doswell's son.

4. Thomas was born in 1765 in Halifax Co. VA. It is not clear how many times he was married, but Jane appears on one deed. His Will only listed 3 living children as he was old when he died in 1853. He appears to be the son who was closest to Doswell. Named in Hurd's journal as a son of Doswell.

5. Catherine married William Roberts. They stayed in Lee Co. VA and have records including a lawsuit brought by Joseph's children in 1842 in Lee Co. VA. She is named in Hurd's journal as an only dau.

6. James was born in 1770 either East or West of the Blue Ridge Mtns. as they moved close to the time of his birth He imarried Rachel (unknown) and stayed in the Scott Co. VA area where he died in 1823 according to the records. He is listed as a son of Doswell in the Hurd journal.

7. George. He is the only one I have not quite nailed down. I believe he is going to be the George Rogers who moved to Madison Co. TN and then to Gasconade Co. MO with his issue. A definite work in progress. I should mention that there is a DOSWELL Rogers living in this area with him. A James living in this area with him is born in Scott Co. VA. Most likely sons of George. Listed as a son of Doswell in Hurd's journal.

8. Adenstone born in the 1760's. Although he is NOT named in Hurd's journal, he is a son to Doswell. He witnessed the deeds in Wythe Co. in 1792 just before the Rogers moved to Russell Co.VA . He has a resource of records in Lee Co. VA.. Then ca in 1819 he moved his family to Clay Co. KY. This is probably why Hurd never heard or remembered him. They then moved to IN where he and his son, Adenstone, Jr. died.

9. Doswell, Jr.Is NOT mentioned in the Hurd Journal. Doswell, Jr. is mentioned as buying land from Doswell, SR in Lee Co.. For years people thought that Doswell, SR was the one written into the family bible as having been born in 1736 and dying in 1809. However, I found a deposition in Lee Co. that Doswell, SR. signed in 1812 proving that he still lived in lee Co. VA. Apparently, it was Doswell, Jr. who died in 1809 as there are no records for him anywhere after that date. Again Hurd probably never knew of him since he was born in 1813 in TN."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Doswell by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Doswell:

Doswell Rogers born in 1736 had a son name WILLIAM ROGERS. There is NO documented middle name for William on any of the documents I have found thus far for him. Someone has assumed that his middle name was PERRY because in later generations there is a man who was a person named William Perry Rogers, but he was not born in 1763 in Halifax Co. VA to Doswell Rogers.
My DNA matches with Adduston Rogers cousins from York Co. VA. Therefore, Adduston Rogers did marry Catherine Doswell the daughter of John Doswell. Although Catherine is not named in her father's Will, Adduston Rogers was named as guardian for her brother, Thomas Doswell. There are later documents in York Co. about these relationships and the guardianship of Thomas.

Eleanor Rogers Edmondson

Addston Rogers married Catherine DOSWELL. That is where my Doswell got his given name. The town of Doswell, VA was named for Catherine's brother, Thomas, whose Doswell family were horse breeders. You can order a book from Amazon on them. I do know that Catherine married first a MOSS and second a ROGERS. There were no Moss issue as far as I know.

Adduston Rogers was made a guardian of Thomas Doswell for a number of years per the Will of his father John Doswell. This is how the connection between the Doswell-Rogers-Adduston families was formulated by Chan Edmondson while researching in the VA State Archives in Richmond, VA. The NGSQ from 1989 has a good outline for how the Adenstone name became entrenched in the Rogers families. I think it also caused the naming of Doswell Rogers. Texas has quite a few Adenstons and Doswell Rogers buried here. Some are from different branches of the Rogers family, but they all are documented back to York Co. VA. In fact, I met one at a Conference in Richmond, VA several years ago and their branch had moved to South TX while my branch lives in West TX and another group were buried here as well having come down from NM.

Doswell Rogers only has one documented wife which only appears on 2 deed records in Wythe Co. VA in 1792--Ann. She may be a first or second wife. She has no birth or death dates or marriage records. All we have are 2 deed records.

Doswell signed his name as "R". The sons used the standard "X".

When you sign your name with an "X", that does not mean the surname Rogers. That means that you do NOT read or know how to write your name. Therefore, you put an "X" to mean you understand when they read the document to you and you acknowledge that fact by putting "X" because you do not know how to write your name. That is why they always write above and below the X his X mark.

This was sent to me by Eleanor Edmondson. She also stated that DAR record number C504701 that has Elizabeth (perhaps the first wife?) and Doswell information on it. https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/13599045?h=5163f3 My understanding of it was that Doswell wrote the “R” for Rogers and then his son also signed the Rogers that is spelled out.
