Barnaby was the son of John Rogers and Adriana de Weyden.[1] His birth date is not known. It is possible that he was born in Antwerp or NW Germany before his father returned to England in 1548. (See his father’s profile.)
He, along with his mother and siblings, witnessed his father’s burning at the stake in 1555.[2]
In the Easter 1582 petty sessions held at Colchester, Essex, a Barnaby Rogers was recorded as being a tailor of Wormingford, available for work.[3] Wormingford is about five miles from Boxted, where Barnaby Rogers, also a tailor, married in 1610 and died in 1627. Given the geographical proximity and occupation, Barnaby Rogers of Wormingford is potentially the father of Barnaby Rogers of Boxted.
There is currently no evidence (aside from them having the same name) of Barnaby Rogers of Wormingford being the same person as Barnaby the son of John Rogers the martyr.
Barnaby is shown as having married. There is no sourcing provided for this. There is though a record of a marriage on 19 May 1583 of a Barnabe Rogers to Christiana Bucknall at Saint Michael Coslany, Norwich, Norfolk[4] and this may be the Barnaby of this profile. There is an image of the parish register entry on FindMyPast, and Christiana is described as a Dutchwoman[5]: the likelihood of this being a record of Barnaby’s marriage is increased by the fact that Barnaby may have been born in Antwerp or NW Germany, where his father was from the mid 1530s to 1548, and that his mother came from Antwerp.
The only sources for his being father of a Barnaby Rogers born in Essex in 1588 seem to be trees on the internet[6]: the coincidence of first names raises the possibility that there was a close family relationship, but if there was, Barnaby junior may have been a son of one of his brothers. Better sourcing is needed, and meanwhile it must be regarded as uncertain that he had such a son.
Barnaby has previously been shown as father of a John Rogers born in Devon in 1600, which looks pretty unlikely. Until and unless firmer evidence emerges, the relationship has been severed on WikeTree.
Barnaby has previously been shown on Wikitree as having died at Boxted, Essex in 1627, but this almost certainly represents confusion with his postulated son Barnaby Rogers.
